In Spain, a '' comarca'' (, sing. ''comarca'') is either a traditional territorial division without any formal basis, or a group of municipalities, legally defined by an autonomous community for the purpose of providing common local government services. In English, a comarca is equivalent to a district, county, area or zone. Legally defined comarcas The large majority of legally defined comarcas are in Catalonia (42) and Aragon (33)), and are regulated by law and are governed by a comarcal council with specified powers. There are seven comarcas formally registered in Basque Country and one in Castile and León. In Andalusia and Asturias, comarcas are defined by law but lack any defined function. Arenas Del Rey
Arenas del Rey is a village located in the province of Granada, Spain. According to the 2006 census ( INE), the city had a population of 1,231 inhabitants. The village is just north of the Sierras of Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park. Arenas del Rey was the worst affected village in the Andalusian earthquake of 25 December 1884 The 1884 Granadan earthquake ( es, Terremoto de Granada de 1884) occurred on 25 December 1884 at 9:08 p.m in the south of Spain, and had an estimated magnitude of 6.7 . It shook a poor region where many of the houses were built without foundations .... Almost 90% of the houses collapsed, and the rest were badly damaged. The whole village was a pile of rubble. The church and all other public buildings were destroyed. There were 135 deaths and 253 people were injured. The snowfall that followed caused up to three more deaths per day for over a week. Alhama De Granada
Alhama de Granada is a town in the province of Granada, approx. 50 km from the city of Granada. The name is derived from the thermal baths located there, which are called ''al-hammah'' in Arabic. History There is clear evidence that the Romans used the hot springs located near the town. In the 15th century, Arabs consolidated the town next to these hot springs and it was long believed that they built the thermal baths there, though Salvador Raya Retamero, a local historian, argues in his book ''Reseña histórica de los baños termales de la muy noble y leal ciudad de Alhama de Granada'' ("Brief history of the hot springs of the most noble and loyal city of Alhama de Granada") that the earliest baths are in fact Roman in origin.
