Colóquio
''Colóquio'' is the umbrella title for a series of magazines, published by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, capital of Portugal, from January 1959. These have been dedicated to different areas of knowledge: arts, letters, sciences, education, and society. Only one of those, ''Colóquio Letras'', is still published. The first magazine in the series was entitled ''Colóquio, Revista de Artes e Letras'' (Magazine of Arts and Letters) and was published between January 1959 and December 1970, which was the 61st edition. The Arts part of the magazine was edited by the physician and art historian, Reynaldo dos Santos until his death in 1970, while the literary part was edited by Hernâni Cidade. The first issues were designed by the artist, Bernardo Marques with this responsibility later being passed on to Marcelino Vespeira and Fernando de Azevedo. Joana Morais Varela
Maria Joana Custódio de Morais Varela, known as Joana Morais Varela (born 1952), is a Portuguese magazine director, editor and translator. She is best known for her role as director of the literary magazine, ''Colóquio, Colóquio Letras'', from 1996 to 2008. Early life Varela was born in Marinha Grande in the Leiria District of Portugal on 29 January 1952, the daughter of Carlos José Pestana de Abreu Varela and Maria da Ascensão Ferreira Custódio de Morais. She is the sister of the economist and banker, António Morais Varela, a former administrator of the Bank of Portugal. Morais graduated in philosophy from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lisbon, where she was a student of David Mourão-Ferreira, who she subsequently succeeded as director of ''Colóquio Letras''. Marcelino Vespeira
Marcelino Macedo Vespeira (Samouco, Alcochete, 9 September 1925- Lisbon, 22 February 2002) was a Portuguese painter and graphic artist. A leading figure in the surrealist movement in Portugal, Vespeira built a long and diversified work. It emerged in the mid-1940s in the context of Portuguese neo-realism, it reached a high point in the surrealist and intensely personal works made between 1948 and 1952; after that he went through abstractionism to return, in more recent decades, to the themes and forms from his surrealist period. Life and career He took the course at the Escola de Artes Decorativas António Arroio, in Lisbon, and attended the 1st year of Architecture at the School of Fine Arts in Lisbon. Reynaldo Dos Santos
Reynaldo dos Santos (3 December 1880 – 6 May 1970) was a Portuguese physician, writer, and art historian. As a physician, he was a pioneer in the fields of vascular surgery and urology; as an art historian, he published numerous works on 15th-century Portuguese art, including on the Manueline style and on the paintings of Nuno Gonçalves. Biography Reynaldo dos Santos was born in 1880 to Clemente José dos Santos (himself a physician) and Maria Amélia Pinheiro Santos, in the family home in Rua das Varinas, Vila Franca de Xira, a town in the outskirts of Lisbon. He concluded his primary and secondary studies in this town, before enrolling at the Medico-Surgical School in Lisbon, from which he graduated in 1903. Between 1902 and 1905, he was abroad in Paris and the main surgical centres of the United States, in Boston, Chicago, Rochester, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York. Nuno Júdice
Nuno Judice (Mexilhoeira Grande, Algarve, 29 April 1949) is a Portuguese essayist, poet, writer, novelist and Professor. Poet and fiction writer, his literary debut was with the Concept of Poem in 1972. He graduated in Romance Philology from the University of Lisbon and obtained the degree of Doctor from the New University of Lisbon (Universidade Nova), where he is a full professor, presenting in 1989 a thesis on Medieval Literature. He published anthologies, critical editions of literary studies and maintains as a regular contributor in the press. He received Spain's Queen Sofia Ibero-American Poetry Prize in 2013, awarded by the Spanish National Heritage and the University of Salamanca, in the amount of 42,100 euros.
