Columbus Day is a national holiday in many countries of the Americas and elsewhere, and a federal holiday in the United States, which officially celebrates the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's Voyages of Christopher Columbus, arrival in the Americas. He went ashore at Guanahani, Guanahaní, an island in the The Bahamas, Bahamas, on October 12, 1492 [OS]. On his return in 1493, he moved his coastal base of operations east to the island of Hispaniola, in what is now the Dominican Republic and established the settlement of La Isabela, the first permanent Spanish settlement in the Americas. Dióscoro Teófilo Puebla Tolín (25 February 1831 – 24 October 1901) was a Spanish painter in the Academic art, Eclectic style who specialized in portraits, Genre art, genre and history painting. Biography Puebla was born in Melgar de Fernamental, Spain. His first studies took place in the public schools of Carrión de los Condes, where he displayed his talent for drawing.
