Columban Missionaries
The Missionary Society of St. Columban () (abbreviated as S.S.C.M.E. or SSC), commonly known as the Columbans, is a missionary Catholic society of apostolic life of Pontifical Right founded in Ireland in 1917 and approved by the Holy See in 1918. Initially it was known as the Maynooth Mission to China. Members may be priests, seminarians or lay workers. Fr John Blowick, one of the two founders of the Society, also founded the Missionary Sisters of St. Columban to share in their work. The society is dedicated to St. Columbanus. The current international headquarters is in Ma Yau Tong Village, Hong Kong, S.A.R. Foundation The Society was founded through the inspiration of the Reverend (later Bishop) Edward Galvin of Ireland (1882–1956). Edward Galvin
Bishop Edward J. Galvin (November 23, 1882 - February 23, 1956) was founder of the Missionary Society of St. Columban and the first Bishop of Hanyang, China. Early life Edward J. Galvin was born at Newcestown, County Cork, Ireland, on 23 November 1882. He was ordained a Catholic priest at St Patrick's College, Maynooth, County Kildare, in 1909 for his home diocese of Cork. He spent his first three years as a priest 'on loan' to the diocese of Brooklyn, New York. While there, in January 1912, he met Father Fraser, who was en route back to China. China 1912 – 1916 In February 1912, Fr. 'Ned' Galvin left Brooklyn for China. He went first to Toronto to join Fr. A curate () is a person who is invested with the ''care'' or ''cure'' () of souls of a parish.
