State Highway 183 (SH 183) is a highway in Bent County, Colorado. SH 183's southern terminus is at County Route HH (CR HH) near Fort Lyon, and the northern terminus is at U.S. Route 50 (US 50) east of Las Animas. Route description SH 183 runs , starting at a junction with CR HH near Fort Lyon, which was formerly used as a prison by the Colorado Department of Corrections. The route heads north, ending at a junction with US 50 east of Las Animas. Bent County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, its population was 5,650. The county seat and only Colorado municipalities, incorporated municipality is Las Animas, Colorado, Las Animas. The county is named in honor of frontier trader William Bent. History As Colorado experienced population growth following the American Civil War, government had to be closer to the people for commerce and justice to be better served in growing communities. Territorial Bent County was created in February 1870, followed by Greenwood County, Colorado Territory, Greenwood County the following month. Fort Lyon
Fort Lyon was composed of two 19th-century military fort complexes in southeastern Colorado. The initial fort, also called Fort Wise, operated from 1860 to 1867. After a flood in 1866, a new fort was built near Las Animas, Colorado, which operated as a military post until 1897. It has been used as a United States Army fort, a sanatorium, a neuropsychiatry facility, and a minimum security prison. The state closed the prison in 2011, and in early 2013 proposed to use the site as a rehabilitation center for homeless people. Then in late 2013 it became a rehabilitative transitional housing facility for homeless people with some form of substance abuse problem. This is run by the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless and has been a developing program to the present day. The fort is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Las Animas, Colorado
Las Animas is the statutory city that is the county seat, the most populous community, and the only incorporated municipality in Bent County, Colorado, United States. The city's population was 2,300 at the 2020 United States census. Las Animas is located on the Arkansas River, just west of its confluence with the Purgatoire River (or "Purgatory River"), in southeast Colorado east of Pueblo, near the historic Bent's Fort. Etymology According to legend, the town and the Purgatoire River were named after a group of ''conquistadores'', probably part of Coronado's expedition, who died without the last rites sacrament of a priest. According to Catholic belief, their souls would go to Purgatory as a result.
