Shopping Mall
A shopping mall (or simply mall) is a large indoor shopping center, usually Anchor tenant, anchored by department stores. The term ''mall'' originally meant pedestrian zone, a pedestrian promenade with shops along it, but in the late 1960s, it began to be used as a generic term for the large enclosed shopping centers that were becoming increasingly commonplace. In the United Kingdom and other countries, shopping malls may be called ''shopping centres''. Quintard Mall
Quintard Mall is an enclosed shopping mall located in Oxford, Alabama, United States. Opened in 1970 and expanded in 2000, it has of retail space. Quintard Mall's anchor stores are Dillard's and JCPenney, the mall also has a movie theatre, AmStar 12 Cinemas. History Quintard Mall was developed by James A. Grimmer and opened in August 1970. At that time, the mall included thirty-two inline tenants and two anchor stores: JCPenney and Britt's Department Store, the department store division of J.J. Newberry. The Britt's store was closed in the early 1980s and replaced with Sears, which expanded the Britt's building in 1997. Expansion plans were first announced in the mid-1990s. These plans were complicated by the presence of Snow Creek, a drainage ditch which had to be covered so that the mall expansion could be built over it, and it took the developer seven years to satisfy all of the environmental permits. Parkway Place
Parkway Place is an upscale shopping mall in Huntsville, Alabama that opened on October 16, 2002. Parkway Place is located at the site of the older Parkway City Mall, which was torn down to allow for the construction of the newer facility. The mall is located at the intersection of Memorial Parkway ( U.S. 231) and Drake Avenue. With a total of and 70 in-line stores, Parkway Place is anchored by Dillard's and Belk. The mall is now the only indoor shopping mall in Huntsville after Madison Square Mall closed in early 2017. Parkway Place offers shoppers of the Tennessee Valley several stores that are unique to the Huntsville market, including, Torrid, Build-A-Bear Workshop, American Eagle/Aerie, and Chico's. Montgomery Mall (Alabama)
Montgomery Mall was an enclosed shopping mall in Montgomery, Alabama, United States. Opened in 1970, it closed in 2008 after several years of declining traffic. In February 2013, redevelopment began on the vacant mall property. There are 3 vacant anchor stores that were once Steve & Barry's, JCPenney, and Parisian. History Montgomery Mall opened in 1970 with Montgomery Fair and JCPenney as its anchor stores. Other major tenants at the time included Lerner New York, Morrison's Cafeteria, Singer Sewing Center, and Elmore Variety Store. The Montgomery Fair store was later rebranded Gayfers. An expansion, begun in 1987 and completed in 1988, added a new wing anchored by Parisian. In 1998, Glimcher Realty Trust bought the mall for $70 million. McFarland Mall
McFarland Mall was a regional L-shaped shopping mall on Skyland Boulevard (U.S. Route 11) in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Located near the interchange of Interstate 20/ 59 with McFarland Boulevard ( U.S. Route 82), it was in the southern section of the city. Opening on February 19, 1969, the mall replaced Woods Square Shopping Center and Leland Shopping Center as the main commercial retail center in the Tuscaloosa area. Brandon Crawford and Associates of Birmingham was the architect for the mall. General contractor for the project was N.C. Morgan Construction Company of Tuscaloosa. McGiffert and Associates of Tuscaloosa provided the engineering services for the mall. At its opening in 1969, McFarland Mall had 2 anchor stores, Woolco and Gayfers and 30 stores. The Mall At Westlake
The Mall at Westlake, almost always referred to as Westlake Mall is a vacant and closed community mall in Bessemer, Alabama. History Westlake Mall was built on a former lake bed, along US Highway 11. The mall opened in 1969 with three anchors, Sears, Grant's, and Loveman's. In 1970, former Governor George Wallace held a campaign event for re-election at the mall that was estimated to be attended by 10,000 people, one of the biggest turnouts during his last gubernatorial race. In the late 1970s and 1980s, the mall saw decline. In November 1983, an 18 year old female was raped after being kidnapped near the mall by masked abductors. Jasper, Alabama
Jasper is a city in and the county seat of Walker County, Alabama, United States. Its population was 14,352 as of the 2010 census. Named in honor of Sergeant William Jasper, an American Revolutionary War hero, Jasper was settled around 1815 and incorporated on August 18, 1886. The first significant growth of the area was in 1886 when the Kansas City, Memphis and Birmingham Railroad and the Sheffield & Birmingham Railroads were completed through Jasper. The population grew from 200 people in 1886 to more than 3,000 in 1890. In a special edition in 1891, the ''Mountain Eagle'' stated there were six coal mines, two sandstone quarries, 400 coke ovens, one foundry and machine shop, two saw mills, one brick works, four hotels, and two banks. Jasper Mall
Jasper Mall is an enclosed shopping mall located in Jasper, Alabama, United States, approximately northwest of Birmingham. History The mall opened on August 8, 1981. It currently is approximately in size, and includes three anchors and about 10 smaller stores. Originally developed by the local Simmons family and Georgia developer George Ewing, the mall is owned by Kohan Retail. Anchor JCPenney moved from downtown to the mall when it opened. The local paper has reported that it is unusual for a mall to have Kmart as an anchor. Sharp Development Group, led by Sam Sharp, purchased the mall from Jasper Mall Associates in 1996. Third anchor Belk opened an approximately store in March 2002. This was part of an expansion of the mall by Sharp Realty.
