Colonel Richard Henry Dulany (August 10, 1820 – October 31, 1906) was an American equestrian. Early life Richard Henry Dulany was born on August 10, 1820, in Unison, Loudoun County, Virginia. He was the son of John Peyton Dulany and Mary Ann DeButts, and the grandson of Samuel DeButts of Oxon Cove Park and Oxon Hill Farm. The Dulany family descend from the O'Dulanys of County Queen's, Ireland, and reached America when Daniel (the Elder), Joseph, and William Dulany arrived in Port Tobacco, Charles County, British Colonial Maryland, in April, 1703. Adult life He Dulany founded the Upperville Colt & Horse Show in 1853. It is the oldest horse show in America. He also founded the Piedmont Fox Hounds in 1840, one of the oldest foxhunting organizations in the country. Daniel Dulany The Elder
Daniel Dulany the Elder (1685–1753) was a prominent lawyer and land-developer in colonial Maryland, who held a number of colonial offices. In 1722 Dulany wrote a pamphlet entitled ''The Right of the Inhabitants of Maryland, to the Benefit of the English Laws'', asserting the rights of Marylanders over the Proprietary Government. Early life Dulany was born in Upperwoods, Queen's County, Ireland about 1685. In November 1702, a flotilla of merchantmen, known as the "Armada of 100 ships" sailed for the Chesapeake Bay, arriving in March, 1703. Dulany, along with two older brothers (William and Joseph) landed at Port Tobacco, and became indentured to Colonel George Plater II for a three-year period. Plater put Dulany to work as a law clerk. Welbourne (Middleburg, Virginia)
Welbourne is the main house of what was formerly a large plantation in Loudoun County, Virginia. The original core of the house, in what is now the south wing, was built about 1770. The stone house was two and a half stories tall, with three bays, one room deep. Some of the original woodwork survives in this section of the house. The house was expanded greatly by John Peyton Dulany around 1830, adding five bays in stuccoed brick, connected to the original house by a transverse hall. The interior of the new section features Greek Revival detailing. A two-story portico with Italianate columns was added in the 1850s, and the house was further enlarged with a two-story addition on the south side in the 1870s. The whole is covered with stucco, detailed with faux-painted joints. The house faces an axial lane through a park-like setting. 6th Virginia Cavalry
The 6th Virginia Cavalry Regiment was a cavalry regiment raised in Virginia for service in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. It fought mostly with the Army of Northern Virginia. On September 11, 1861, Kentucky-born West Point graduate Col. Charles W. Field, Charles William Field, who had commanded the Cavalry Camp of Instruction in Ashland, Virginia with the assistance of Capt. Lunsford L. Lomax beginning in late June 1861, was appointed Colonel of the new 6th Regiment of Virginia Volunteer Cavalry. Initially, his Lt.Col. was Williams C. Wickham, and Dr. J. Grattan Cabell of Richmond named the unit's Major. Col. Upperville Colt & Horse Show
The Upperville Colt & Horse Show is the oldest horse show in America. Started in 1853 by Colonel Richard Henry Dulany, the show was designed to showcase and improve local breeding stock in Northern Virginia. Colonel Dulany continued to run the show until his death in 1906. The show has occupied the same scenic spot since its inception years ago; under the shady oak trees of Grafton Farm, near Upperville, Virginia. History According to historians, Colonel Dulany was riding cross-country one cold winter's day and came across a young colt who was cast in a low fence. Stopping to free the young horse, he realized the colt had been stuck long enough for his feet to have frozen. Port Tobacco
Port Tobacco, officially Port Tobacco Village, is a town in Charles County, in southern Maryland, United States. The population was 13 at the 2010 census, making Port Tobacco the smallest incorporated town in Maryland. Overview This was historically the territory of Algonquian-speaking peoples, especially the Potapoco and the more dominant Piscataway. Settled by the English in the 17th century and established in 1727, the town on the Port Tobacco River soon became the second largest in Maryland. The first county seat of Charles County, it was a seaport with access to the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean. It declined rapidly after river traffic was cut off by silting and the town was bypassed by the railroad. The town incorporated in 1888, but in 1895 the county seat moved to nearby La Plata, which drew population away but left the town with its historic significance intact.
