Cologne Fine Art Award
The Cologne Fine Art Award (German: Cologne-Fine-Art-Preis) was awarded annually as part of the art exposition Art Cologne, ART Cologne. It was awarded by the Cologne Trade Fair Company (Kölner Messegesellschaft Köln Messe) and the Federal Association of German Art Publishers (Bundesverband Deutscher Kunstverleger e. V) . Eligible were reproducible works, such as art printing or photography. The prize consisted of 10,000 euros and a special exposition within the ART Cologne. Art Cologne
Art Cologne is an art exhibition, art fair held annually in Cologne, Germany and was established in 1967 as ''Kölner Kunstmarkt''. It is regarded as the world's oldest art fair of its kind. The fair runs for six days and brings together galleries from more than 20 countries at the Cologne Exhibition Centre, one of the world’s largest exhibition centers. It is open to the public and attracts about 60,000 visitors. Background The ''Art Cologne'' was the first art fair organized by and for commercial galleries to exhibit and sell Modern and Contemporary art. This kind of art fair distinguished itself from earlier art fairs such as the 57th Street Art Fair in Chicago or the Ann Arbor Art Fairs in Michigan, in which artists themselves marketed their works directly to the public from stands set-up in the streets. Georg Baselitz
Georg Baselitz (born 23 January 1938) is a German Painting, painter, Sculpture, sculptor and Graphic arts, graphic artist. In the 1960s he became well known for his Figurative art, figurative, expressive paintings. In 1969 he began painting his subjects upside down in an effort to overcome the Representation (arts), representational, content-driven character of his earlier work and stress the artifice of painting. Drawing from myriad influences, including art of History of the Soviet Union, Soviet era illustration art, the Mannerism, Mannerist period and African sculptures, he developed his own, distinct artistic language. Horst Antes
Horst Antes (born 28 October 1936 Heppenheim, Germany) is a German artist and sculptor. Early life and education After his Abitur, he studied from 1957 to 1959 under the important woodcutter HAP Grieshaber at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste (today known as the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe) in Karlsruhe. In 1959, the artist's work was honoured with two prizes, art prize of the city of Hanover and the Pankofer prize on the occasion of the German Youth Art prize. Career In his early paintings, Antes sought a path somewhere between figurative painting and the L'Art Informel. One of his most important role models was Willem de Kooning. Candida Höfer
Candida Höfer (born 4 February 1944) is a German photographer. She is a renowned photographer known for her exploration of public spaces and architecture. In her career she transitioned from portraiture to focusing on spaces like libraries and museums. She is a former student of Bernd and Hilla Becher. Like other Becher students, Höfer's work is known for technical perfection and a strictly conceptual approach. Her work explores the ways in which institutional architecture shapes and directs human experience. Höfer's technical approach is reflective of her goals as an artist. Leiko Ikemura
is a Japanese-Swiss artist who works in a variety of mediums, including oil painting, sculpture, and watercolor. She divides her time between Cologne and Berlin, teaching painting at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin. Active on the international art scene since the 1970s, she is known for her work within the Neo-Expressionism movement of the 1980s, as well as her continually evolving style. Much of her oeuvre features elements of symbolism, involving the creation of magical universes blend elements of her animals, humans, and plants. Günther Uecker (; 13 March 1930 – 10 June 2025) was a German painter, sculptor, op artist, and installation artist. He became known primarily for his nail reliefs. In 1961, Uecker joined the Zero (art), ZERO group. Early life and education Uecker was born on 13 March 1930 in Kuhlen-Wendorf, Wendorf, Mecklenburg. He grew up on a farm. At the end of World War II, he had to nail doors and windows to protect his mother and sister. Russian soldiers forced him, then age 15, to recover bodies that had been washed to the shore of the Baltic Sea. Uecker began his artistic education in 1949 when he took up studies at Wismar in 1952. He then went to the art school in Berlin-Weißensee, where he was educated in social realism, including work on a statue of Lenin 20 meters high. He was dismissed from the institution. Andreas Schulze (born 1955) is a German painter. Early life and education Schulze was born in Hanover. From 1978 through 1983, Schulze attended the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he studied under the painter Dieter Krieg. Career and work Andreas Schulze first began showing alongside neo-expressionist artists in the 1980s, although his work was considerably less gestural than that of his contemporaries. The artist instead opted for more rounded forms, which he used to create a playful, humorous style of figuration. Katharina Sieverding
Katharina Sieverding (born 16 November 1941) is a German photographer known for her self-portraiture. Sieverding lives and works in Berlin and Düsseldorf. She is a professor emeritus at the University of the Arts, Berlin. Early life and education Sieverding was born in Prague, in the then Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, to German parents. She grew up in the Ruhr region. She began studying art at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in 1964. There she started studying stage design alongside Georg Klusemann and Jörg Immendorff under Teo Otto, but later joined the sculpture class taught by Joseph Beuys in 1967.
