Collingwood Manor Massacre
The Collingwood Manor Massacre is the name of an infamous hit on three Chicago gunmen by the notorious Purple Gang on September 16, 1931, after the men had betrayed the trust of the others in the gang. Background Gambling, local wire service, drug distribution, bootlegging, certain trade unions, as well as extortion rackets, were all operated by the Purple Gang. In 1927, the Purple Gang was on top of their game running Detroit's underworld. When three Chicago gunmen, Joseph "Nigger Joe" Lebowitz, Herman "Hymie" Paul, and Isadore "Izzy the Rat" Sutker, fled to Detroit, the Purple Gang's status was put to the test. The men had shaken down Chicago speakeasy operators for protection money. Unknown to them, the victims were under Al Capone's syndicate for purchasing liquor from his suppliers. Joseph Zerilli (born Giuseppe Zerilli; ; December 10, 1897 – October 30, 1977) was an Italian-born gangster who rose to power in the crime family known as the Detroit Partnership, leading from the 1930s through much of the 1970s. He immigrated to the United States from Sicily in 1914 at the age of 17. Early life Zerilli was born on December 10, 1897, in Terrasini, Sicily, to Anthony and Rosalie Zerilli. Abe Bernstein (c. 1892 – March 7, 1968) was a Detroit-based Jewish-American organized crime figure and leader of the infamous Prohibition-era Purple Gang. Harry Keywell
Harry Keywell (December 8, 1910 – August 30, 1997) was a convicted member of the infamous Purple Gang, that terrorized Detroit, US during Prohibition. Chicago Police questioned him about the infamous St. Valentine's Day Massacre in February 1929, on the suspicion that Keywell acted as a lookout for the killers, however Harry had a cast-iron alibi for the day. He was arrested for involvement in the Collingwood Manor Massacre on September 16, 1931, convicted, and sentenced to life in prison at Marquette, Michigan. He was paroled on October 21, 1965, aged 54. He had a spotless prison record for 34 years before his life sentence was commuted. Because of the involvement of his brother, Phil Keywell, he was released early for good behavior.
