Belfast West (Assembly Constituency)
Belfast West is a constituency in the Northern Ireland Assembly. It was first used for a Northern Ireland-only election in 1973, which elected the Northern Ireland Assembly, 1973, then Northern Ireland Assembly. It usually shares boundaries with the Belfast West (UK Parliament constituency), Belfast West UK Parliament constituency. However, the boundaries of the two constituencies were slightly different from 1973 to 1974, 1983 to 1986 and 2010 to 2011 (because the Assembly boundaries had not caught up with Parliamentary boundary changes) and from 1996 to 1997, when members of the Northern Ireland Forum had been elected from the newly drawn Parliamentary constituencies but the 51st Parliament of the United Kingdom, elected in 1992 under the 1983–95 constituency boundaries, was still in session. Danny Baker (politician)
Daniel Baker is an Irish Sinn Féin politician who has been a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for Belfast West since 2022. He previously served as Lord Mayor of Belfast from 2019 to 2022, and a Belfast City Councillor for the Collin DEA from 2017 to 2022. Early life Baker attended De La Salle College and St Colm's High School in Twinbrook, Belfast. Political career Baker was co-opted onto Belfast City Council in 2017, and re-elected in 2019, representing the Collin electoral area. Social Democratic And Labour Party
The Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP; ) is a social democratic and Irish nationalist political party in Northern Ireland. The SDLP currently has eight members in the Northern Ireland Assembly ( MLAs) and two members of Parliament (MPs) in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom. The SDLP party platform advocates Irish reunification and, pending the unity of all the people of Ireland and while the northern jurisdiction remains part of the United Kingdom, further devolution of powers. It is a sister party of the UK Labour Party, which maintains an electoral pact with the SDLP not to stand candidates in Northern Ireland but to support SDLP candidates instead. People Before Profit (, PBP) is a Trotskyist political party formed in October 2005. The party is active in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. History As Socialist Environmental Alliance People Before Profit was established in 2005 as the People Before Profit Alliance by members of the Socialist Workers Party (SWP), a Trotskyist organisation affiliated to the International Socialist Tendency (IST). 2023 Belfast City Council Election
The 2023 election to Belfast City Council was held on 18 May 2023, alongside other local elections in Northern Ireland, two weeks after local elections in England. The Northern Ireland elections were delayed by 2 weeks to avoid overlapping with the coronation of King Charles III. Voters returned 60 members to the council via single transferable vote. Lisburn City Council
Lisburn City Council was the local authority for an area partly in County Antrim and partly in County Down in Northern Ireland. As of May 2015 it was merged with Castlereagh Borough Council as part of the reform of local government in Northern Ireland to become Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council. Created in 1974, the council was the second largest in the Belfast Metropolitan Area. Council headquarters were in the city of Lisburn. It was the second-largest council area in Northern Ireland with over 120,000 people and an area of of southwest Antrim and northwest Down. The council area included Glenavy and Dundrod in the north, Dromara and Hillsborough in the south, Moira and Aghalee in the west, and Drumbo in the east. Dunmurry Cross was one of the district electoral areas in Lisburn, Northern Ireland which existed from 1985 to 2014. It was one of four Lisburn DEAs until 1993, and one of five until 2014. The district elected seven members to Lisburn City Council and formed part of Belfast West constituencies for the Belfast West (Assembly constituency), Northern Ireland Assembly and Belfast West (UK Parliament constituency), UK Parliament and part of the Lagan Valley constituencies for the Lagan Valley (Assembly constituency), Northern Ireland Assembly and Lagan Valley (UK Parliament constituency), UK Parliament.
