Valva (SA)
Valva is an Italian town and municipality in the Province of Salerno in the south-western region of Campania. Geography It borders with the communes of Calabritto ( AV), Caposele (AV), Colliano, Laviano, Oliveto Citra and Senerchia (AV). It is an agricultural centre of the upper Sele valley, located on its left side and at the feet of the steep and rugged slopes of Monte delle Rose (1372 m) and Monte Marzano (1524 m). History A flourishing town of the same name was present nearby at the time of the Roman Empire. During Barbarian invasions the inhabitants built a new settlement, higher up the mountain; the ruins of this town, Valva Vecchia, can still be seen. Muro Lucano formerly Muro (until 1863) is a city and ''comune'' in the province of Potenza, in the northern part of the region of Basilicata, southern Italy. History The city is situated on the site of the ancient Numistri, at the foot of the Apennines, the scene of a clash between Hannibal and Marcellus' forces in the Second Punic War in the year 210 BC. After the Angevin period, Muro Lucano's castle saw long feuding by the Orsini family until the end of Italian feudalism in 1806. In the eighteenth century, after the earthquake of 1694, the Orsinis made profound changes to the manor by raising the ground floor, knocking down the drawbridge and building a new building leaning on the two towers. Oliveto Citra ( Campanian: ) is a town and '' comune'' in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-western Italy. It is located by road northeast of Salerno. As of 2016, the comune had 3,802 inhabitants and covered an area of . History Archaeological discoveries in the vicinity have unearthed artifacts dating as far back as the 6th century B.C. The castle of Oliveto was first mentioned in documents in 1114, when Santa Maria de Foris, in the hamlet of Oliveto, was given to the archbishop of Conza by Count Quaimario Giffoni. Later that century, the manor was owned by the French Norman, William of toille (Tuilla). Until the Risorgimento, the castle was the seat of feudal lords and local barons.
