Colin Genge
Colin Melville Genge (October 2, 1859 – March 25, 1910) was a politician, contractor and business man from Alberta, Canada. Early life Genge was born in Kingston, Canada West in the year 1859. He moved to Fort Macleod, North-West Territories in 1881 and married his wife Anne May Ryan in 1884. Upon moving to Fort Macleod Genge became involved in numerous local business ventures. He operated a hardware store, owned a sandstone quarry, and ran the Fort Macleod Telephone Company. Along with his retail and telecom ventures Genge also worked as a contractor. He designed and built the Queens Hotel in 1903 using sandstone from his own quarry. Genge became interested in politics and started his career on the municipal level serving 2 terms as Mayor of Fort Macleod beginning in 1904. The Legislative Assembly of Alberta is the deliberative assembly of the province of Alberta, Canada. It sits in the Alberta Legislature Building in Edmonton. The Legislative Assembly currently has 87 members, elected first past the post from single-member electoral districts. Malcolm McKenzie
Malcolm McKenzie (May 31, 1863 – March 15, 1913) was a Canadian politician who served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta and, briefly, as Alberta Provincial Treasurer. Early life Malcolm McKenzie was born in Kincardine, Ontario, in 1863. He attended Queen's University, from which he graduated with a gold medal in philosophy, and then studied for a year in Toronto, Ontario. He came west around 1888 and, after a brief stay in Calgary, North-West Territories (NWT), settled in Fort Macleod, NWT, where he joined the law firm Haultain, McKenzie and McNeill. That firm dissolved when its senior partner, Frederick W. A. G. Haultain, went to Regina to serve as the first Premier of the Northwest Territories. Robert Patterson (Alberta Politician)
Robert Patterson (April 11, 1855 – February 28, 1938) was a Canadian provincial politician from Alberta. Early life Robert Patterson was born in Tipperary, Ireland on April 11, 1855 to George and Mary Patterson. Patterson immigrated to Canada at the age of 21 and joined the North-West Mounted Police in 1876 and dispatched to Fort Macleod. Patterson began ranching in 1880 in Slide, Ontario and bought out his partner in 1884. Patterson served on Fort Macleod town council and a member of the school board for a number of years. Political life Patterson was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta in a by-election on October 3, 1910. He ran as a Farmers Choice candidate and defeated Liberal candidate Edward Maunsell. Fort Macleod
Fort Macleod ( ) is a town in southern Alberta, Canada. It was originally named Macleod to distinguish it from the North-West Mounted Police barracks (Fort Macleod, built 1874) it had grown around. The fort was named in honour of the then Commissioner of the North-West Mounted Police, Colonel James Macleod. Founded as the Municipality of the Town of Macleod in 1892, the name was officially changed to the already commonly used Fort Macleod in 1952. History The fort was built as a square on October 18, 1874. The east side held the men's quarters and the west side held those of the Mounties. 1909 Alberta General Election
The 1909 Alberta general election was the second general election held in the Province of Alberta, Canada on March 22, 1909, to elect 41 members of the Alberta legislature to the 2nd Alberta Legislature. The incumbent Liberal Party led by Premier Alexander C. Rutherford was re-elected to a majority government with 36 of the 41 seats in the legislature, and just under 60 per cent of the popular vote.
