Colin Bennett (film Critic)
John Colin Monash Bennett (1929 – 23 February 2022) was an Australian film critic, best known for his long tenure at ''The Age'' newspaper. He was a critic at ''The Age'' from 1955 until 1980 and was thus very influential in cinema culture of Melbourne. Bennett played a key role in the Melbourne International Film Festival and Australian Film Institute. Biography Bennett started his career as a cadet at ''The Age''. He worked for a number of years in England where he began reviewing films. When Bennett returned to Australia he resumed work at ''The Age'' and became its film critic. After leaving ''The Age'' Bennett set up a riding school with his wife. Australian films Bennett was highly critical of Australian films throughout his career. The Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) is an annual film festival held over three weeks in Melbourne, Australia. It was founded in 1952 and is one of the oldest film festivals in the world following the founding of the Venice Film Festival in 1932, Cannes Film Festival in 1939 and Berlin Film Festival in 1951. Originally launched at Olinda outside Melbourne in 1952 as the Olinda Film Festival, in 1953, the event was renamed the Melbourne Film Festival. ''Dust in the Sun'' is a 1958 Australian mystery film adapted from the 1955 novel ''Justin Bayard'' by Jon Cleary and produced by the team of Lee Robinson and Chips Rafferty. The film stars British actress Jill Adams and an indigenous-Australian actor Robert Tudawali as Emu Foot. Synopsis Justin Bayard, a Northern Territory policeman, is escorting an aboriginal warrior, Emu Foot, to Alice Springs to be tried for a tribal killing. Timothy Burstall AM (20 April 1927 – 19 April 2004) was an English Australian film director, writer and producer, best known for hit Australian movie '' Alvin Purple'' (1973) and its sequel '' Alvin Rides Again''. Burstall's films featured early appearances by many legendary Australian actors including Jack Thompson, Bruce Spence, Jacki Weaver, ''Alvin'' star Graeme Blundell, John Waters and Judy Davis. Speaking just after Burstall's death, David Williamson said that Burstall "couldn't stomach" Australia's lack of a film industry. David James Stratton (born 10 September 1939) is an English-Australian award-winning film critic, as both a journalist and interviewer, film historian and lecturer and television personality and producer. David Keith Williamson AO (born 24 February 1942) is an Australian dramatist and playwright. He has also written screenplays and teleplays. Early life David Williamson was born in Melbourne, Victoria, on 24 February 1942, and was brought up in Bairnsdale. He initially studied mechanical engineering at the University of Melbourne from 1960, but left and graduated from Monash University with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in 1965.
