Colgate is an Unincorporated area#United States, unincorporated community in Steele County, North Dakota, Steele County, North Dakota, United States. Founding The townsite was founded in 1882. A post office called Colgate was established in 1883 and remained in operation until 1972. The community has the namesake of James Boorman Colgate, who was the largest land owner with he bought from the Northern Pacific Railway. Schools There was a Colgate School District, but after the school closed in 1964, children began attending schools in Hope, North Dakota, Hope and Page, North Dakota, Page (now the Hope-Page School District). It was first illuminated in Clarksville on November 17, 1924. It is located directly across the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky. History Before the building was bought by Colgate, it served as the Indiana Reformatory South. It opened in 1847, replacing the state prison which had opened in Jeffersonville, Indiana, Jeffersonville in 1821. In 1919 a fire broke out in the prison, causing extensive damage that would have been very expensive to repair. Instead, the state of Indiana decided to relocate the prison to Pendleton, Indiana.
