Coldwater River (Mississippi)
The Coldwater River is a river which flows for through northwestern Mississippi in the United States. It is a tributary of the Tallahatchie River, and part of the watershed of the Mississippi River, via the Yazoo River. In the past, the Coldwater River has been referred to as the Okalopasaw, Copasaw, or Cold Water River. The one-word name "Coldwater" was officially settled upon in 1891. Course The Coldwater River rises in Marshall County, Mississippi, along Mississippi Highway 4 near the Benton County line. The river then flows northwest through a corner of Benton County and then the breadth of Marshall county to a point just south of the unincorporated community of Barton, where it turns southwest as it enters DeSoto County. Along the Desoto County- Tate County line, the river is impounded by a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dam to form Arkabutla Lake. Tate County, Mississippi
Tate County is a county located in the northwestern portion of the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of the 2020 census, the population was 28,064. Its county seat is Senatobia. Organized in 1873 during the Reconstruction era, from portions of DeSoto, Marshall, and Tunica counties, the county is named for Thomas Simpson Tate, one of the first prominent American settlers of the area. Tate County is part of the Memphis, TN-MS-AR Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located about south of Memphis and one county east of the Mississippi River. Marks, Mississippi
Marks is a city in and the county seat of Quitman County, Mississippi. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 1,444. History The town of Marks was named after Leopold Marks (1851-1910) who left Germany to avoid conscription by the German army. He arrived in New York in 1868. Marks, a Jew, became Quitman County's first representative to the state legislature and served for eight years. He encouraged the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad to come to the area by giving the railroad company, without cost, the right-of-way through his plantation plus of land. Leopold Marks' son Henry donated land to the town to be used as a cemetery. The official "founding" of the town is considered to be May 12, 1907; on May 12, 2007, the town celebrated its centennial. On September 26, 1913, a black man named Walter Brownloe, accused of attacking a white farmer's wife, was taken from the town prison by a mob and hanged. Quitman County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of the 2020 census, the population was 6,176, making it the third-least populous county in Mississippi. Its county seat is Marks. The county is named after John A. Quitman, Governor of Mississippi from 1835 to 1836 and from 1850 to 1851. Quitman County is located in the Mississippi Delta region of Mississippi. History Quitman County was formed in 1877 from portions of Tunica, Coahoma, Panola, and Tallahatchie Counties.
