Col Des Issartets
The Col des Issartets is a mountain pass, both a road and a motorway pass, located in the Massif Central on the Aubrac plateau, in the department of Lozère. This pass on the A75 motorway reaches an altitude of 1,123 meters (1,125 meters for the departmental road passing over the bridge), making it the highest motorway pass in France. Geography The pass marks the administrative boundary between the municipalities of Sainte-Colombe-de-Peyre to the north and Le Buisson to the south. It is located not far from Lac du Moulinet, a highly frequented water recreation area in the Marvejols region. The Route nationale 9, or ''RN 9'', is a Route Nationale (France), route nationale in France between Moulins, Allier, Moulins and the border with Spain across 591 kilometres. A75 Autoroute
The A75 is an '' autoroute'' (motorway) in France. Known also as ''la Méridienne'', it is a developmental project aiming to speed up, and reduce the cost of car travel from Paris to the south of France. Apart from the Millau Viaduct, it is free for the entire between Clermont-Ferrand and Béziers. It was not due to be finished until spring 2011, but was fully opened in December 2010. South of St. Flour there are views of the Garabit viaduct. A large portion of the A75 is also part of the European route E11. Engineering achievements The building of a motorway across the Massif Central, in itself, poses engineering challenges. Much of the motorway runs at an altitude in excess of with in excess of . Aubrac
Aubrac () is a volcanic and granitic plateau located in the south-central Massif Central of France. This region has been a member of the Natura 2000 network since August 2006. It straddles three ''départements'' (Cantal, Aveyron and Lozère) and three '' régions'' (Auvergne, Midi-Pyrénées and Languedoc-Roussillon). The village of the same name is located in this region. Geography, geology Aubrac is a volcanic and granitic plateau that extends over an area of 1,500 km2. The volcanic eruptions occurred between 6 and 9 million year ago and were of Hawaiian type with fluid lavas. There are therefore no individual volcanic cones. The volcanic zone occupies the west side while the other part of the plateau is formed of granite. Marvejols
Marvejols (; ) is a commune in the southern French department of Lozère. Its inhabitants are known as ''Marvejolais''. Geography The commune is located in the Massif central. The Colagne flows southward through the middle of the commune and crosses the town. History A medieval city exemplifying the Occitan culture, Marvejols was strengthened during the Hundred Years War against the English. Following the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre, the town walls were reinforced to protect the Huguenot population during the French Wars of Religion, Protestant Capt. Matthieu Merle based himself at Marvejols during his conquest of the Gévaudan. But, having sided with the then Protestant Henri of Navarre, the future King Henry IV of France, the town was besieged and burned to the ground by the Catholics.
