Coker is a town in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. It incorporated in 1999. At the 2020 census, the population was 904. It is part of the Tuscaloosa, Alabama Metropolitan Statistical Area. Geography Coker is located at (33.246283, -87.679221). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. Demographics As of the census of 2010, there were 979 people, 365 households, and 280 families residing in the town. There were 428 housing units. The racial makeup of the town was 95.20% White, 2.00% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.90% Asian, 0.15% from other races, and 0.10% from two or more races. 1.80% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. Coker, Texas
Coker was a community located in north central Bexar County, Texas, US, near Hill Country Village, along Loop 1604. History The Coker Community was founded in 1841 by John Coker (1789–1851) on of land he had been awarded for his service in the Texas Revolution. James Harrison Coker (1827–1892), son of Joseph Coker, John Coker's brother, was the first teacher at the Coker School, and his daughter Sarah Jane Coker (1860–1930) was the midwife there. Sarah Jane was married to Zachary Taylor Autry who was a Texas Ranger and early settler of Northern Bexar County, Texas. Coker Creek, Tennessee
Coker Creek is an unincorporated community in Monroe County, Tennessee, United States. It is located on Tennessee State Route 68, south of Tellico Plains. Its population in the 2020 census was 150. Coker Creek lies in the southern Appalachian Mountains (specifically, the Unicoi Mountains) completely surrounded by the Cherokee National Forest, and just west of the Tennessee-North Carolina state line. Tellico Mountain lies to the north, Farner Mountain to the south, Unicoi Mountain to the east, and Cataska Mountain to the west. There are homes and businesses, 11 graveyards, nine churches, and many hiking trails and artisan shops as well as a Christian summer camp, Smoky Mountain Christian Camp. East Coker
East Coker is a village and civil parish in Somerset, England. Its nearest town is Yeovil, to the north. The village has a population of 1,667. The parish includes the hamlets and areas of North Coker, Burton, Holywell, Coker Marsh, Darvole, Nash, Keyford as well as the southern end of the Wraxhill area. History A Roman villa was discovered in East Coker in the 18th century and subsequent excavation has discovered artefacts including a mosaic; however, further work is needed to fully identify the plan of the building. In the Domesday Book of 1086 the villages of West and East Coker were known as ''Cocre''. The parish was part of the hundred of Houndsborough. The Manor of East Coker was held by the Courtenay family of Powderham from 1306 until 1591. They built Coker Court as the manor house which was eventually sold to Edward Phelips, a wealthy landowner in the region. East Coker (poem)
''East Coker'' is the second poem of T. S. Eliot's ''Four Quartets''. It was started as a way for Eliot to get back into writing poetry and was modelled after ''Burnt Norton''. It was finished during early 1940 and printed in the UK in the Easter edition of the 1940 '' New English Weekly'', and in the US in the May 1940 issue of ''Partisan Review''. The title refers to a village in Somerset that was connected to his Eliot family ancestry and where Eliot's ashes were placed in St Michael and All Angels' Church, East Coker. The poem discusses time and disorder within nature that is the result of humanity following only science and not the divine. Leaders are described as materialistic and unable to understand reality. The only way for mankind to find salvation is through pursuing the divine by looking inwards and realising that humanity is interconnected. Only then can people understand the universe. West Coker
West Coker is a large village and civil parish in Somerset, England, situated south west of Yeovil. History The name Coker comes from Coker Water ("crooked stream" from the Celtic ''Kukro''). Artifacts from early settlement in the parish include a polished stone axe and boat shaped-bronze brooch. A Roman villa has been excavated and a bronze plate inscribed to the god Mars discovered. From this Mars was given the title Mars Rigisamus (which means "greatest king" or "king of kings") as it depicts a standing naked male figure with a close-fitting helmet; his right hand may have once held a weapon, and he probably originally also had a shield (both are now lost). The same epithet for a god is recorded from Bourges in Gaul. The use of this epithet implies that Mars had an extremely high status, over and above his warrior function. Coker University is a private university in Hartsville, South Carolina, United States. It was founded in 1908 and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Coker's sports teams, nicknamed the Cobras, compete in NCAA Division II. History Coker University began in 1894 as "Welsh Neck High School", founded by a local businessman and American Civil War veteran, Major James Lide Coker. In 1908, when South Carolina created a statewide public school system, Coker led the effort to convert the school to "Coker College for Women". Davidson Hall and Memorial Hall are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Pee Dee Area Council was a Boy Scouts organization located in northeastern South Carolina. The Indian Waters Council headquartered in Columbia, SC absorbed the council on August 1, 2022. Coker Tire Company is a Chattanooga, Tennessee-based company that manufactures and sells vintage-style Michelin, Firestone, BF Goodrich and Uniroyal bias-ply and radial whitewall tires for collector automobiles. History The company was originally a tire and service center founded in 1958 by Harold Coker. He would later give his son Corky Coker the opportunity to manage the antique division, which was a small percentage of the company's earnings. Corky devoted 40 years to growing the antique division of the business, eventually making it the company's primary focus. Coker Unit
A coker or coker unit is an oil refinery processing unit that converts the residual oil from the vacuum distillation column into low molecular weight hydrocarbon gases, naphtha, light and heavy gas oils, and petroleum coke. The process thermally cracks the long chain hydrocarbon molecules in the residual oil feed into shorter chain molecules leaving behind the excess carbon in the form of petroleum coke. This petroleum coke can either be fuel grade (high in sulphur and metals) or anode grade (low in sulphur and metals). The raw coke from the coker is often referred to as green coke. In this context, "green" means unprocessed. The further processing of green coke by calcining in a rotary kiln removes residual volatile hydrocarbons from the coke. The calcined petroleum coke can be further processed in an anode baking oven in order to produce anode coke of the desired shape and physical properties.
