Coharie is the name for the Great Coharie Creek and its tributary the Little Coharie Creek, both in Sampson County, North Carolina. The Great Coharie Creek is a tributary of the Black River that joins the Cape Fear River that flows into the Atlantic Ocean. Coharie also refers to the Coharie Formation, named for the creeks, a terrace, and shoreline at about 215 feet above sea level on the mid- to southern East Coast. The name ''Coharie'' was adopted by the Coharie Intra-tribal Council, Inc., a state-recognized tribe in North Carolina. The tribe claims "descent from certain tribes of Indians originally inhabiting the coastal regions of North Carolina." In 1910, residents of Herrings Township along the Coharie creeks identified as being of Croatan descent. Coharie Formation
Leon County Pleistocene coastal terraces and shorelines were the geologic result of warming and cooling periods in what is now Leon County, Florida during the Pleistocene epoch. Overview Repeated growth and retreat of the North American glacial sheet resulted in fluctuations of sea level over several thousand years. Florida submerged and emerged several times leaving behind established terraces assigned by mineral deposits and maximum sea level relative to the current mean sea level. These marine terraces and shorelines were named by various geologists, verified and mapped by the USGS. Each glacial retreat caused sea level to rise less than the previous warming event, giving an extremely accurate depiction of the appearance of Florida. Leon County was studied in detail by C. W. Black River (North Carolina)
The Black River is a tributary of the Cape Fear River, approximately 50 mi (80 km) long, in southeastern North Carolina in the United States. It is formed in southern Sampson County, approximately 15 mi. (24 km) south of Clinton, by confluence of two creeks: Great Coharie Creek and Six Runs Creek. It flows SSE, receiving the South River approximately 30 mi (48 km) south of Clinton. It flows southeast through Pender County, past the Moores Creek National Battlefield, and joins the Cape Fear approximately 10 mi (16 km) northwest of Wilmington, near the broadening of the Cape Fear into a tidal estuary. The Croatan were a small Native Americans in the United States, Native American ethnic group living in the coastal areas of what is now North Carolina. The Cape Fear River is a blackwater river in east-central North Carolina. It flows into the Atlantic Ocean near Cape Fear, from which it takes its name. The river is formed at the confluence of the Haw River and the Deep River in the town of Moncure, North Carolina. Its river basin is the largest in the state: 9,149 sq mi.
