''Coffee and Cigarettes'' is a 2003 independent anthology film written and directed by Jim Jarmusch. The film consists of eleven short stories which includes the earlier three short films; themes are often comedic and depressed, share coffee and cigarettes as a common thread. Themes The film is composed of a comic series of short vignettes shot in black and white built on one another to create a cumulative effect, as the characters discuss things such as caffeine popsicles, Paris in the 1920s, and the use of nicotine as an insecticide – all while sitting around drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes. ''Cigarettes & Coffee'' is a 1993 short film written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, and starring Philip Baker Hall. It tells the story of five people connected through a $20 bill. Anderson later used it as a basis for his directorial debut film '' Hard Eight''. Plot At a diner, a man (Kirk Baltz) talks to an older man (Philip Baker Hall) over cigarettes and coffee. He explains how, while gambling at a casino, he wrote his name on a $20 bill for good luck. Before he could use it, he ran into his friend Steve and loaned him the bill. He headed back to the hotel room where he was supposed to meet Steve, Steve's wife, and his wife, but his wife told him that Steve and Steve's wife would come later. He saw the bill with his name on it on the floor and became paranoid. He took the bill and won almost $8,000 gambling with it. John Anthony White (; born July 9, 1975) is an American musician who achieved international fame as the guitarist and lead singer of the rock duo the White Stripes. Jay Rabinowitz is an American film editor and commercial editor. He is certified by the American Cinema Editors. Rabinowitz studied at New York University, where he graduated in 1984 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the undergraduate Cinema Studies program. During the program he learned of a film in pre-production that needed an intern, which turned out to be Jim Jarmusch's '' Down by Law'' (1986). He is credited as the assistant editor for several films in the next years, including Jarmusch's ''Mystery Train'' (1989-edited by Melody London). Thomas A. DiCillo (born August 14, 1953) is an American film director, screenwriter, cinematographer, and musician. Early life DiCillo was born in Camp Le Jeune, North Carolina. His father was Italian and his mother was from New England. He studied creative writing at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia and went on to study filmmaking at New York University's Film School alongside Jim Jarmusch, Howard Brookner, Sara Driver and Spike Lee. Robby Müller
Robby Müller, NSC, BVK, (4 April 1940 – 3 July 2018) was a Dutch cinematographer. Known for his use of natural light and minimalist imagery, Müller first gained recognition for his contributions to West German cinema through his acclaimed collaborations with Wim Wenders. Through the course of his career, he worked closely with directors Wim Wenders, Jim Jarmusch, Peter Bogdanovich, Barbet Schroeder, and Lars Von Trier, the latter with whom he pioneered the use of digital cinematography. His work earned him numerous accolades and admiration from his peers. He died on 3 July 2018, aged 78, having suffered from vascular dementia for several years. William Rice (October 17, 1931 – January 23, 2006) was an American actor, artist, and member of the avant-garde art scene in Manhattan's East Village for many years. Early life and education He was born in Vermont and graduated from Middlebury College. Career After graduating from Middlebury, Rice moved into an apartment on Third Avenue in Manhattan in 1953. A painter, film actor, and an unaffiliated scholar, Bill Rice was one of the central figures in the various bohemian enclaves that gathered and overlapped in the Lower East Side of the 1960s.
