Nymphalidae
The Nymphalidae are the largest family of butterflies, with more than 6,000 species distributed throughout most of the world. Belonging to the superfamily Papilionoidea, they are usually medium-sized to large butterflies. Most species have a reduced pair of forelegs and many hold their colourful wings flat when resting. They are also called brush-footed butterflies or four-footed butterflies, because they are known to stand on only four legs while the other two are curled up; in some species, these forelegs have a brush-like set of hairs, which gives this family its other common name. Many species are brightly coloured and include popular species such as the emperors, monarch butterfly, admirals, tortoiseshells, and fritillaries. However, the under wings are, in contrast, often dull and in some species look remarkably like dead leaves, or are much paler, producing a cryptic effect that helps the butterflies blend into their surroundings. Nymphalini
Nymphalini is a tribe of nymphalid brush-footed butterflies. Common names include admirals, anglewings, commas, and tortoiseshells, but none of these is specific to one particular genus. The name anglewing butterflies is an English translation of a Latin term ''papiliones angulati'', Denis & Schiffermüller">Ignaz Schiffermüller">Schiffermüller/nowiki>, ( 775, 1776. Based on an overall similarity in the angulate wing shape, a collective name: ''Papiliones angulati'' was employed for ''Papilio atalanta'', ''P. antiopa'', ''P. cardui'', ''P. c-album'', ''P. io'', ''P. polychloros'', ''P. urticae'', ''P. xanthomelas'', ''P. vaualbum'', ''P. levana'' and ''P. prorsa''. The term ''papiliones angulati'' is applied as a collective taxon name, which therefore needs no type species as specified in Article 42.3.1 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. ''Papiliones angulati'' has thus been re-defined to apply only to a clade: ''Nymphalis sensu lato'', and to specificall ... Nymphalinae
The Nymphalinae are a subfamily of brush-footed butterflies (family Nymphalidae). Sometimes, the subfamilies Limenitidinae, and Biblidinae are included here as subordinate tribe(s), while the tribe Melitaeini is occasionally regarded as a distinct subfamily. Systematics The traditionally recognized tribes of Nymphalinae are here listed in the presumed phylogenetic sequence:See references in Savela (2010) * Coeini (six or seven genera) * Nymphalini – anglewings, tortoiseshells and relatives (about 15 genera, two are fossil) * Kallimini (about five genera) * Victorinini (four genera, formerly in Kallimini) * Junoniini (about five genera) * Melitaeini – fritillaries (about 25 genera) Genera ''incertae sedis'' are: * '' Rhinopalpa'' – the wizard * ''Kallimoides'' Shirôzu & Nakanishi, 1984 – African leaf butterfly * ''Vanessula'' Dewitz, 1887 In addition to these, '' Crenidomimas'' is sometimes placed here, but may belong in the Limenitidinae, genus '' Euryphura'' ...
