Cody Fowler House
Cody Fowler House is a historic home built in Temple Terrace, Florida, in 1922. It was designed by M. Leo Elliott. The house is located at 313 Sleepy Hollow Avenue. The Fowler House is one of eight original Mediterranean Revival style homes designed for the developers of Temple Terrace by Elliott. It was built for Cody Fowler, an attorney and former president of the American Bar Association whose mother, Maude Cody Fowler, was one of the founders of Temple Terrace and a Vice-Mayor. Tampa's Florida State Road 582, Fowler Avenue, one of the main thorough fares of Temple Terrace, is named after Maude for her contributions to the development and establishment of Temple Terrace as a prominent community of the Tampa Bay Area. Temple Terrace
Temple Terrace is a city in northeastern Hillsborough County, Florida, United States, adjacent to Tampa. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 26,690. It is the third and smallest incorporated municipality in Hillsborough County, after Tampa and Plant City. Incorporated in 1925, the community is known for its rolling landscape, bucolic Hillsborough River views, and sand live oak trees; it is a Tree City USA. Originally planned in the 1920s as a Mediterranean-Revival golf course community, it is one of the first such communities in the United States. Mediterranean Revival
Mediterranean Revival is an architectural style introduced in the United States, Canada, and certain other countries in the 19th century. It incorporated references to Spanish Renaissance, Spanish Colonial, Italian Renaissance, French Colonial, Beaux-Arts, Moorish architecture, and Venetian Gothic architecture. Peaking in popularity during the 1920s and 1930s, the movement drew heavily on the style of palaces and seaside villas and applied them to the rapidly expanding coastal resorts of Florida and California. Structures are typically based on a rectangular floor plan, and feature massive, symmetrical primary façades. Stuccoed walls, red tiled roofs, windows in the shape of arches or circles, one or two stories, wood or wrought iron balconies with window grilles, and articulated door surrounds are characteristic. Cody Fowler
Cody Fowler was a lawyer in Tampa, Florida who was noted early in his career for his willingness to defend African Americans in court, something many other white lawyers at the time were unwilling to do. Fowler went on to become chairman of both Tampa and Florida’s Bi-Racial Commissions in 1959, which were formed to help the city and state to navigate racial issues. He was also appointed president of the American Bar Association in 1950, becoming the first Tampa lawyer to attain that distinction. The Cody Fowler House, which was built for him by M. State Road 582 (SR 582) is an east–west state highway in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. The current alignment of SR 582 is Fowler Avenue just south of the northern city limit of Tampa and Temple Terrace from Florida Avenue ( U.S. Route 41 Business (US 41 Bus.)/ SR 685) to US 301 ( SR 41).
