Coching Chu
Coching Chu (; March 7, 1890 – February 7, 1974), also romanized as Zhu Kezhen, was a Chinese geologist and meteorologist. Life and career Born in Shangyu, Zhejiang, Chu received his secondary education at the Tangshan School of Rail and Mining in Shanghai. Upon receiving the Boxer Indemnity Scholarship, Chu went to United States for his college education in 1910. He graduated from the College of Agriculture, University of Illinois in 1913. He then studied under Robert DeCourcy Ward at Harvard University and received his Ph.D. in meteorology in 1918. From 1920 to 1929, he was chairperson of Department of Meteorology, Nanjing University (formerly known as the Nanking Higher Normal School, National Southeastern University, and National Central University). From 1929 to 1936 he served as director of the Chinese Institute of Meteorology of the Academia Sinica, which at the time was located in mainland China. Boxer Indemnity Scholarship
The Boxer Indemnity Scholarship Program was a scholarship program for Chinese students to be educated in the United States, funded by the Boxer Indemnities. On May 25, 1908, the U.S. Congress Senate and House of Representatives passed the Joint Resolution (S. R. 23) to return to China the excess of Boxer Indemnity, amounting to over $11.9 million ($ million in ). Despite fierce controversies over returning the excess payment, President Theodore Roosevelt's administration decided to establish the Boxer Indemnity Scholarship Program to educate Chinese students in the United States. President Roosevelt recognized this program as a chance for "American-directed reform in China" that could improve United States–China relations and raise America's standing in the world. Ma Yinchu
Ma Yinchu (; 1882–1982) was a prominent Chinese economist. He was the father of China's family planning. Biography Early life Ma Yinchu was born in Sheng County, Shaoxing, Zhejiang. He was the fifth child of the owner of a small distillery that specialized in fermented rice liquor. While his father wished for him to carry on this business, Ma showed an inclination toward scholarship. As a result, his father cut him off financially, and their relationship never recovered. His Christian uncle enlisted Ma into a Protestant church middle school in Shanghai. Despite losing his father's support, he studied mining and metallurgy at Beiyang University (now called Tianjin University). In 1907, Ma received government sponsorship to study economics at Yale University, after which he received a Ph.D. in economics and philosophy from Columbia University in 1914. Zheng Xiaocang
Zheng Xiaocang (1892–1979; ), was a Chinese writer, translator, and educator. He is well known for his large publications about education in China. Zheng was a former acting president of Zhejiang University, and former president of Zhejiang Normal University. Biography Zheng was born in September 1892 in Haining County, Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province. In June 1912, Zheng graduated from Zhejiang Advanced College (current Zhejiang University) in Hangzhou.
