Cobra (La Ronde)
Cobra was a stand-up roller coaster located at La Ronde amusement park in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Built by Intamin, Cobra opened to the public in 1988 at Skara Sommarland amusement park, where it operated until 1994. It reopened at La Ronde the following season in 1995 and was one of only three stand-up roller coasters manufactured by Intamin. Cobra was removed from the park's website in 2016 and then demolished in 2018. History The roller coaster was relocated in 1994 from the Skara Sommarland amusement park in Sweden, where it was known as the ''Stand Up''. In 2007, it was announced that a colony of Townsend's big-eared bats had settled in the ride's engine room. La Ronde (amusement Park)
La Ronde () is an amusement park in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, built as the entertainment complex for Expo 67, the 1967 World Fair. Today, it is operated by Six Flags under an emphyteutic lease with the City of Montreal, which expires in 2065. It is the largest amusement park in Quebec and second largest in Canada. It occupies on the northern tip of Saint Helen's Island–a man-made extension to the island in the vicinity of where the small ''Ronde Island'' had once been, and the origin of the park's name. The park hosts the annual Montreal Fireworks Festival, an international fireworks competition. La Ronde, and Frontier City in Oklahoma City, are the only two company parks not officially branded as Six Flags parks. A stand-up roller coaster is a roller coaster designed to have the passengers stand through the course of the ride. History The first stand-up roller coasters in the world were originally built as sit-down roller coasters. Japanese manufacturer TOGO designed stand-up roller coasters that were first deployed in 1982 on Momonga Standing & Loop Coaster, originally built in 1979 at Yomiuriland in Tokyo, Japan. The same change was also performed on Dangai at the former Thrill Valley amusement park in Gotemba, Shizuoka, Japan. Vertical Loop
The generic roller coaster vertical loop, where a section of track causes the riders to complete a 360 degree turn, is the most basic of roller coaster inversions. At the top of the loop, riders are completely inverted. History The vertical loop is not a recent roller coaster innovation. Batman The Escape was a stand-up roller coaster located at Six Flags AstroWorld in Houston, Texas, United States. Manufactured by Intamin, the ride featured one inversion and originally opened as Shockwave at Six Flags Magic Mountain in 1986. Six Flags AstroWorld, also known simply as AstroWorld, was a seasonally operated amusement park in Houston, Texas.
