Cobb Creek (Oklahoma)
Cobb Creek, also known as Pond Creek, is a watercourse in Washita County, Oklahoma, Washita and Caddo County, Oklahoma, Caddo counties in Oklahoma. It originates in Washita County just south of the Custer County, Oklahoma, Custer-Washita county line (E1070 Rd), being south of Weatherford, Oklahoma. It flows generally south-southeast, feeding into the 157-acre Crowder Lake University Park, Crowder Lake, also known as the Cobb Creek Watershed Dam No. 1. It continues below the lake, passing through Colony, Oklahoma, after which it turns more southeasterly and crosses into Caddo County. It joins Fort Cobb Lake from the west. Cobb Creek continues south-southeast below that lake, and ends when it becomes a tributary of the Washita River just southeast of Fort Cobb, Oklahoma. The creek is a perennial stream maintained by discharge from the Rush Springs Aquifer. Fort Cobb is a town in Caddo County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 518 at the 2020 census. History Fort Cobb was established as a U.S. Army frontier post in Indian Territory on October 1, 1859, east of the present location of the town. The fort was named after Secretary of the Treasury Howell Cobb, a friend of the founding officer, Major William Emory. The post was later occupied by both Southern and Northern forces during the Civil War, the Union taking control of the fort as part of the 1862 Tonkawa massacre. Washita County is a county located in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. As of the 2020 census, the population was 10,924. Its county seat is New Cordell. The county seat was formerly located in Cloud Chief. The county was created in 1891. History In 1883, John Miles leased of Cheyenne and Arapaho land to seven cattlemen. However, arguments soon developed between the cattlemen and the tribesmen. In 1885, the Federal government terminated all of the leases and ordered the cattlemen to remove their stock. The area was settled in 1886, when John Seger established a colony along Cobb Creek. Seger convinced 120 Cheyenne and Arapaho to settle near the old ranch headquarters at Cobb Creek. The intent was that "Seger's Colony" would teach these tribes how to farm, using modern agricultural methods. Crowder Lake University Park is a reservoir in Washita County, Oklahoma, south of Weatherford on SH 54, east and south on County Road, then west on Park Road. The park is on the Crowder Lake. Once a state park, it has been owned and operated by Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) since 2003. Colony is a town in northeastern Washita County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 136 at the 2010 U.S. census, a decrease of 7.5 percent from 147 in 2000. It was named for the Seger Colony, founded in 1886, which taught modern agricultural techniques to the Arapaho and Cheyenne tribes that would be resettled in the vicinity.
