Cnesterodontini
Cnesterodontini is a Tribe (biology), tribe of fishes which are within the subfamily Poeciliinae of the Family (biology), family Poeciliidae. This tribe is distinguished from other tribes in the Poeciliinae by the males having five rays in the pelvic fin, there is a pedicle at the base of the third ray which joins it to the fourth ray, another pedicle at the third rays tip and a membrane there too. Genera The following genera are included within the tribe: * ''Cnesterodon'' Samuel Garman, Garman, 1895 * ''Phalloceros'' Carl H. Eigenmann, Eigenmann, 1907 * ''Phalloptychus'' Eigenmann, 1907 * ''Phallotorynus'' Arthur Wilbur Henn, Henn, 1916 * ''Tomeurus'' Eigenmann, 1909 Other workers include only ''Cnestrodon'', ''Phallotorynus'' and ''Phalloceros'' while putting Tomerues in its own tribe, the Tomeurini, and ''Phalloptychus'' into a new tribe called Girardinini along with the genera ''Girardinus'', ''Phallichthys'', ''Xenophallus'' and ''Poeciliopsis''. Tomeurus
''Tomeurus gracilis'' is a species of poeciliid fish native to South America, in Brazil, Surinam and Venezuela. This species grows to a length of TL. It is the only known member of its genus. This species is classified in the tribe Cnesterodontini in the 5th edition of Fishes of the World ''Fishes of the World'' is a standard reference for the systematics of fishes. It was first written in 1976 by the American ichthyologist Joseph S. Nelson (1937–2011). Now in its fifth edition (2016), the work is a comprehensive overview of t ..., but more recent classifications place it as the only member of the subfamily Tomeurinae, the facultative viviparous poeciliids. This is a sociable fish which lives in small schools consisting of several dozens of fishes. It is found in muddy creeks or along the sandy-muddy edges of shallow estuaries. It has been observed remaining still just below the surface but it prefers to hide beneath aquatic plants. Fertilisation is internal and, uniq ...

Poeciliinae
Poeciliinae is a subfamily of killifish from the family Poeciliidae which contains species from the Americas which are collectively known as the livebearers because many, but not all, of the species within the subfamily are ovoviviparous. Characteristics All of the members of the subfamily Poeciliinae are ovoviviparous, i.e. they give birth to live young, except ''Tomereus'', with internal fertilisation and a large yolk in the egg. The males have the anterior rays, normally the third to fifth rays, in the anal fin elongated to form an intromittent organ called the gonopodium. Habitat and distribution The Poeciliinae are predominantly freshwater fish but some species live in brackish water, and some can even tolerate seawater. They are found in North America as far north as southern Canada, Central America and South America through to Patagonia. Some of the world's most popular aquarium fish such as guppies, swordtails and mollies are from this subfamily. They have been introduced ...

Poeciliidae
Poeciliidae are a Family (biology), family of freshwater ray-finned fishes of the order Cyprinodontiformes, the tooth-carps, and include well-known live-bearing aquarium fish, such as the guppy, Poecilia, molly, Platy (fish), platy, and Green swordtail, swordtail. The original distribution of the family was the Southeastern United States to north of Río de la Plata, Argentina. Due to release of aquarium specimens and the widespread use of species of the genera ''Poecilia'' and ''Gambusia'' for mosquito control, though, introduced poeciliids can today be found in all tropical and subtropical areas of the world. In addition, ''Poecilia'' and ''Gambusia'' specimens have been identified in hot springs pools as far north as Banff, Alberta. Live-bearing All species in the Poecilidae are live-bearers. Differences are seen in the mode and degree of support the female gives the developing larvae. Many members of the family Poeciliidae are considered to be lecithotrophic (the mother prov ...

Phallichthys
''Phallichthys'' is a genus of poeciliids native to Central America. They are hardy fish which inhabit stagnant and slow-flowing waters, making them well-suited to fishkeeping. Etymology The genus name literally means "phallus (penis) fish", from the Greek ''phallos'' meaning "penis" and ''ichthys'' meaning "fish", referring to the "comparatively huge" gonopodium, the modified anal fin used for copulation. The common name for '' P. amates'', the merry widow, is sometimes applied to other species in the genus as well. Taxonomy There are currently four recognized species in the genus ''Phallichthys'': * '' P. amates'' ( N. Miller, 1907) (merry widow livebearer) * '' P. fairweatheri'' D. E. Rosen & R. M. Bailey, 1959 (Picotee livebearer) * '' P. quadripunctatus'' W. A. Bussing, 1979 * '' P. tico'' W. A.
