Stark Street
Stark Street is an east-west-running street in Portland, Oregon, in the United States. The street is named after Benjamin Stark, and Southeast Stark Street and Southwest Stark Street are divided by the Willamette River. In late 2017, activists proposed renaming Southwest Stark Street for gay rights activist Harvey Milk, noting that Stark was an unapologetic racist who advocated for slavery. Ernest Boyd MacNaughton
Ernest Boyd MacNaughton (October 22, 1880August 24, 1960) was president of the First National Bank of Oregon (19321947), then chairman (19471960), president of ''The Oregonian'' publishing company (19471950), and president of Reed College (19481952). He is the namesake of the ACLU E.B. MacNaughton Civil Liberties Award. Early life and education MacNaughton was born in 1880 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to parents Daniel MacNaughton and Lillias Boyd. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1902. His first job after graduation was as a building contractor working for F.B. Gilbreth in Boston. After moving to Portland in 1903, MacNaughton began working in the office of architect Edgar M. Lazarus. Downtown Portland is the city center of Portland, Oregon, United States. It is on the west bank of the Willamette River in the northeastern corner of the southwest section of the city and where most of the city's high-rise buildings are found. Architecture In Portland, Oregon
Portland architecture includes a number of notable buildings, a wide range of styles, and a few notable pioneering architects. The scale of many projects is relatively small, as a result of the relatively small size of downtown-Portland blocks (200 feet by 200 feet) and strict height restrictions enacted to protect views of nearby Mount Hood from Portland's West Hills. In 2020, Clyde Common closed temporarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic, reopening in July with outdoor dining and as a market. The bar and restaurant became known as Clyde Tavern, and the part of the former dining area was called Common Market. Clyde Common closed permanently in January 2022.
