Clunes is a town in Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia, 36 kilometres north of Ballarat, in the Shire of Hepburn. At the 2016 Australian census, 2016 census it had a population of 1,728. Clunes is best known as the site of Victoria's first registered gold discovery in 1850 and its first gold strike in 1873, which lasted three months. A campus of Wesley College, Melbourne, Wesley College is based in Clunes and parts of the original ''Mad Max (film), Mad Max'' (1979) were filmed in the town, famously showcasing the Creswick Creek Bridge, in Clunes’s more regional farming area. Other films include “Ned Kelly” (2016) and Stan TV series “Bloom” (2018). Clunes is a small town in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Australia. It is located approximately northeast of the regional centre of Lismore. In , Clunes had a population of 559 people. It is on the lands of the Widjabal people of the Bundjalung nation who are its traditional owners. Description and history Clunes is situated in hilly country and the volcanic soils provided by nearby Mount Warning (Wollumbin) allow for macadamia and coffee-growing. Clunes was first settled by Europeans in the 1870s following the Robertson Land Act 1861 which allowed for the free selection of crown lands and, by 1883, there were enough children in the area for the creation of Clunes School. There are a number of theories regarding the origin of the name of Clunes and it is believed to be named for Robert Mortimer Clunes, an early engineer in the local dairying industry, however it is also suggested that the town is named for Archibald Clunes Innes. Clunes is a small hamlet, located on the west shore of Loch Lochy, less than 0.5 miles northeast of Bunarkaig in Inverness-shire, Scottish Highlands and is in the Highland council area of Scotland. Geography Clunes lies 4 miles northeast of Gairlochy and 10 miles northeast of Spean Bridge. The B8005 road passes by Clunes on Loch Lochy, and heads west to Loch Arkaig. This section is known as the ''Mìle Dorcha'' (Gaelic for 'dark mile'), as the road runs through a heavily tree-lined, steep sided valley. Hazard's Pavilion
Hazard's Pavilion was a large auditorium in Los Angeles, California, at the intersection of Fifth and Olive Streets. Showman George "Roundhouse" Lehman had planned to construct a large theatre center on the land he purchased at this location, but he went broke and the property was sold to the City Attorney (and soon to be Mayor), Henry T. Hazard. The venue was built in 1887 by architects Kysor, Morgan & Walls at a cost of $25,000, a large amount for the time, and seated up to 4,000 people (some sources say that seating could be up to 8,000; the building was divided into two galleries, and perhaps ''each'' accommodated 4,000). Alexander Sheriff de Moro Clunes (17 May 1912 – 13 March 1970) was an English actor and theatrical manager. Among the plays he presented were Christopher Fry's '' The Lady's Not For Burning''. He gave the actor and dramatist Peter Ustinov his first break with his production ''The House of Regrets''. His film career was brief, but varied. He played Hastings in Laurence Olivier's ''Richard III'' (1955), and also appeared in wartime films such as '' One of Our Aircraft Is Missing'' (1942), although he was in fact a conscientious objector. He also appeared in ''The Adventures of Quentin Durward'' (1955). Clunes' later stage work included succeeding Rex Harrison as Henry Higgins in the stage musical ''My Fair Lady'' in 1959. Alexander Martin Clunes (born 28 November 1961) is an English actor, director and television presenter. He is best known for portraying Martin Ellingham in the ITV comedy-drama series '' Doc Martin'', Gary Strang in the BBC sitcom ''Men Behaving Badly'', and William Shawcross in ''William and Mary''.
