Cloppenburg Castle
Cloppenburg (; nds, Cloppenborg; stq, Kloppenbuurich) is a town in Lower Saxony, Germany, capital of Cloppenburg District and part of Oldenburg Münsterland. It lies 38 km south-south-west of Oldenburg in the Weser-Ems region between Bremen and the Dutch border. Cloppenburg is not far from the A1, the major motorway connecting the Ruhr area to Bremen and Hamburg. Another major road is the federal highway B213 being the shortest link from the Netherlands to the A1 and thus to Bremen and Hamburg. The town had strong cultural links with St Munchins Parish in Limerick, Ireland from the 1970s to the 1990s. During this period many groups of teens/young adults from both areas visited and were hosted by families from the other area. Economy The town is a centre for the largely agricultural region of southern Oldenburg. It is the administrative centre of the district and there are many schools. A sister city or a twin town relationship is a form of legal or social agreement between two geographically and politically distinct localities for the purpose of promoting cultural and commercial ties. While there are early examples of international links between municipalities akin to what are known as sister cities or twin towns today dating back to the 9th century, the modern concept was first established and adopted worldwide during World War II. Route Of Megalithic Culture
The Route of Megalithic Culture (german: Straße der Megalithkultur) was first created as a tourist route that meanders from Osnabrück to Oldenburg in North-West Germany. Signposted with brown road signs it links many places of archaeological interest from the Megalithic era. Signs for the route started going up in 2008 and 2009. The whole 310-kilometre-long route was officially opened on 14 May 2009. The route links many sites of archaeological investigation and 33 stations where the public can visit archaeological sites, for example, with standing stones. On the 27th of August 2013, the route became part of the Cultural Route of the Council of Europe initiative, with sections in a growing number of countries, including Denmark, England, Netherlands, Portugal, and Sweden. Jupp Derwall
Josef "Jupp" Derwall (10 March 1927 – 26 June 2007) was a German professional football manager and player. He was head coach of the West Germany national team between 1978 and 1984, winning the UEFA Euro 1980 and reaching the final of the 1982 FIFA World Cup. Werner Baumbach
Werner Baumbach (27 December 1916 – 20 October 1953) was a German bomber pilot during World War II. He commanded the secret bomber wing Kampfgeschwader 200 (KG 200) of the Luftwaffe, the air force of Nazi Germany. Baumbach received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords for the destruction of over of Allied shipping. Career Baumbach entered the ''Luftwaffe'' in 1936 and, after initial training at the 2nd Air Warfare School ( Fliegerhorst Gatow), was trained as a bomber pilot. He was one of the first pilots to fly the Junkers Ju 88 bomber and flew various bombing missions with Kampfgeschwader 30 (KG 30). On 19 April 1940, he bombed and damaged the French cruiser ''Émile Bertin'' for which he was awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class. Fanny Moran-Olden
Fanny Moran-Olden (28 September 1855 – 12 February 1905) was a German soprano who appeared in leading roles both in her native Germany and in other European opera houses as well as the Metropolitan Opera in New York. She appeared in wide variety of roles but was particularly prominent in the Wagnerian repertoire. Her voice had an unusually wide range which allowed her to sing soprano, mezzo-soprano and contralto roles. She was born in Cloppenburg and died hopelessly insane at the age of 49 in a sanatorium on the outskirts of Berlin. She was married twice, first to the tenor Carl Moran and secondly to the Wagnerian bass-baritone, Theodor Bertram.
