Ross Bell
Ross Taylor Bell (April 23, 1929 – November 9, 2019) was an American entomologist with particular interest in the invertebrate natural history of Vermont, United States, and Ground beetle, carabid beetles. Together with his wife, Joyce Rockenbach Bell, his work at the University of Vermont was largely taxonomic, where they described more than 75% of the Rhysodinae, rhysodine species known to science. Ross also wrote a number of seminal papers in his chosen field. Biography Ross Bell was born April 23, 1929, in Champaign, Illinois, to parents Alfred Hannam Bell and Dorothy Bell. He had two sisters - Martha and Enid. Joyce Rockenbach Bell
Joyce Elaine Rockenbach Bell (born ) is an American nursing teacher and entomologist. She worked on insect taxonomy at the University of Vermont, together with her husband Ross Bell (1929–2019). The pair described more than 75% of the rhysodine species known to science. Life Joyce Elaine Rockenbach grew up in Whitestone, Queens, New York City. Her grandfather apparently told her that "a woman can teach or be a nurse". She gained a B.S. at Queens College and spent eight years as a research assistant at the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons before coming to the University of Vermont to do a Master's. She taught in the UVM School of Nursing for ten years. In 1957 Joyce Rochenbach married the University of Vermont entomologist Ross Bell. They increasingly collaborated on entomological taxonomy, with Joyce specializing in microscopy and illustration. Ground beetles are a large, cosmopolitan distribution, cosmopolitan family (biology), family of beetles, the Carabidae, with more than 40,000 species worldwide, around 2,000 of which are found in North America and 2,700 in Europe. Rhysodinae
Rhysodinae is a subfamily (sometimes called wrinkled bark beetles) in the family Carabidae. There are 19 genera and at least 380 described species in Rhysodinae. The group of genera making up Rhysodinae had been treated as the family Rhysodidae in the past, and subsequent DNA analysis then placed it within Carabidae, where it was sometimes treated as the tribe Rhysodini, but the most recent analyses place it as a subfamily in a clade along with subfamilies Paussinae and Siagoninae, forming a sister to the remaining Carabidae. Description These beetles are elongate, in size ranging from 5–8 mm, and color ranging from a reddish brown to black. Peter Michael Hammond
Peter Michael Hammond (17 February 1941 – 17 September 2021) was a British entomologist who specialised in Coleoptera (beetles). For many years he was the head of the Coleoptera section at the Natural History Museum, London. After working for a time in China, Hammond was appointed to his job at the NHM in the 1960s by the museum's then-head Coleopterist Jack Balfour-Browne (1907–2002). By the late 1960s Hammond was appearing in newspapers as a Museum spokesperson for the Coleoptera section. Hammond's special interest area was the Staphylinidae (rove beetles), but he worked on all families of beetle.
