Clifton Hill Primary School is a heritage-listed public co-educational primary school located in the Melbourne suburb of Clifton Hill, Victoria, Australia. It is administered by the Victorian Department of Education, with an enrolment of 681 students and a teaching staff of 56, as of 2023. The school serves students from Prep to Year 6. It was added to the Victorian Heritage Register on 20 August 1982 for its historical and architectural significance to the state of Victoria. History At the end of 1873, the minister of education at the time accepted a tender for the erection of a state school on Gold Street. The school was designed by William Henry Ellerker and was originally going to be built with a capacity of 500 students in mind, however, Ellerker's design for a capacity of 1,000 students was used instead. Clifton Hill, Victoria
Clifton Hill is an inner-city suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, north-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Yarra local government area. Clifton Hill recorded a population of 6,606 at the 2021 census. It is located is located immediately adjacent to Fitzroy North with which it shares the same postcode. Along with Carlton North and Fitzroy North, Clifton Hill has wide streets than most of inner Melbourne, legacy of a government subdivision laid out by Clement Hodgkinson in the 1860s. William Henry Ellerker
William Henry Ellerker (1837–1891) was an noted architect practicing mainly in Melbourne, Australia in the 1870s and 80s, best known for a series of schools and colleges, and houses for the wealthy. He was Mayor of the suburb of City of St Kilda, St Kilda in 1885–6. Early life Ellerker was born in Birmingham, England, on 8 April 1837. Architectural career In 1853 he immigrated to Melbourne with his parents, and was employed by architect Thomas Kemp (architect), Thomas Kemp (later Knight, Kemp & Kerr) within a few weeks of his arrival. In 1857 he was elected as an Associate of the original Australian Institute of Architects, Institute of Architects in Melbourne, then later as a Member and Fellow, and worked in the Public Works Department and the Victorian Railways. In 1863, he moved to Brisbane, Queensland and his design for the Queensland Parliament House was accepted in 1864.
