Cliff Thorley
Ernest 'Cliff' Thorley (17 January 1916 – 2006) was an English professional footballer who played as a forward and winger. He most notably played in the Football League for Sunderland, Hull City and Bristol City. Playing career Thorley was born in Wath, and began his football career with Frickley Colliery, before turning professional with Sunderland at age 17. Whilst playing for Frickley he captained Yorkshire and represented his county on multiple occasions. One year later he joined Hull City, and then played for Kidderminster Harriers in the Birmingham league before joining Cheltenham Town. Thorley was a very popular player in Cheltenham. He played in 37 of 38 League and Cup matches—missing only one because of a severe cold—and scoring 13 times. Jack Nicholas
John Thomas Nicholas (26 November 1910 – 8 February 1977) was an English professional association football, footballer who played as a wing half and right back for Derby County F.C., Derby County. After relocating to Wales with his family at a young age, he took up football and later captained the Welsh Schoolboys team. In 1926, he signed as a youth player for Derby at aged 16, after Swansea Town A.F.C., Swansea Town declined his request for a professional contract. He made 347 league appearances for Derby between 1928 and 1947, debuting as a right-half and later transitioning to right-back. Nicholas also served as caretaker manager and player-manager during World War II and captained the team during their 1946 FA Cup Final victory. Tom Smith (footballer, Born 1909)
Thomas McCall Smith (4 October 1909 – 21 June 1998) was a Scottish association football player and manager who played as a centre half for Kilmarnock, Preston North End and Scotland. Club career Player Smith, who was born in Fenwick, East Ayrshire, played in juvenile football before signing for Kilmarnock in late 1927. He was out on loan at non-league Galston when the club won the Scottish Cup in 1929, but was part of the ''Killie'' team that lost the 1932 final to Rangers after a replay. A good performance for the Scottish Football League XI in a 1936 inter-league match against Football League XI attracted the interest of Preston North End, and Smith agreed to sign for the Lancashire club soon afterwards. He initially had to compete for the position with Billy Tremelling, and did not play in the 1937 FA Cup Final defeat by Sunderland. Bob Brocklebank
Bob Brocklebank (23 May 1908 – September 1981) was an English football player and manager. He played for Aston Villa and Burnley, for whom he was top scorer in the 1937–38 season, before becoming a manager. He took charge of Chesterfield, Birmingham City, Hull City and Bradford City. Playing career Brocklebank was born in Finchley, England as one of eight brothers. He started his football career as an amateur with his hometown team Finchley, in the London League. In May 1929 he signed for Aston Villa. His chances were limited at Villa Park, and he signed for Burnley during the 1935–36 season where he developed into an inside right earning the nickname ''The Toff'' because of his gentlemanly approach to life and football. Brocklebank made 121 League appearances for Burnley, scoring 33 goals. During the 1937–38 he was the club's top goalscorer with 14 goals.
