Cliff Bowes
Cliff Bowes (November 14, 1894 – July 6, 1929), also known as Clifford Bowes, was an American silent film actor. He appeared in numerous comedy shorts. Biography Born on November 14, 1894, in Pueblo, Colorado, Bowes began his film career with a small, un-credited role in the 1916 film short ''His Lying Heart'', starring Ford Sterling. When the United States entered World War I, Bowes served as a navy pilot. By the end of the decade he was starring in short films, and during the 1920s he made over 100 of them. In 1920, he starred as Waldo Pennanink in his only full-length film, '' Up in Mary's Attic''. In 1923 he began starring in the Educational Pictures film short series ''Mermaid Comedies'', which ran through 1925. He is best remembered for another Education series, ''Cameo Comedies'', which co-starred Virginia Vance, which also began in 1923. Frances Lee (born Merna Phyllis Tibbetts; May 5, 1906 – November 5, 2000) was an American film actress during Hollywood's silent film era, and well into the sound film era of the 1930s. Dancing career Frances Lee was born Merna Phyllis Tibbetts to William George and Nellie (née Leach) Tibbetts in Eagle Grove, Iowa. She initially began pursuing a career as a teacher but began taking dance lessons, which led to her being spotted by Gus Edwards, who owned a theater in New York City. Edwards persuaded Lee to perform at his theater, and she joined the cast of ''The Ziegfeld Follies'' in 1923, when she was hired by Al Christie to perform in his ''Christie Comedies''. Later that year, cover artist Neysa McMein chose her as one of the best of six different types of beauties. Forest Lawn Memorial Park is a privately owned cemetery in Glendale, California. It is the original and current flagship location of Forest Lawn Memorial-Parks & Mortuaries, a chain of six cemeteries and four additional mortuaries in Southern California. History Forest Lawn Memorial Park was founded in 1906 as a not-for-profit cemetery by a group of businessmen from San Francisco. Dr. Hubert Eaton and C.B. Sims entered into a sales contract with the cemetery in 1912. Eaton took over its management in 1917. Although Eaton did not start Forest Lawn, he is credited as its "Founder" for his innovations of establishing the "memorial-park plan". Virginia Vance (July 1, 1902 - October 13, 1942) was a silent film actress in the United States. She married actor Bryant Washburn. Biography Vance was born in Chicago and raised in Toronto, Canada. She appeared in some 90 films including comedy shorts, serials, and features including in leading roles. She appeared in Cameo Comedies with Cliff Bowes. She is knocked over by a custard pie in the 1926 film ''His Private Life''. In 1929 she married and left filmmaking. She had a daughter. Cameo Comedies is a brand of short comedy films made in the United States. The films are one-reel shorts from Jack White's Educational Pictures and Colonial Motion Picture Corporation. Three of the productions utilized 3D stereoscopic effects in the titles. The films were produced for $5,000 each. They were made from 1922 to 1932, spanning the silent film and talkie eras. Cliff Bowes, Phil Dunham and Lupino Lane were among the actors. Supporting actors included Wallace Lupino, Anna Styers and Virginia Vance. Mermaid Comedies were Educational's line of two-reelers. Al Alt was a starring performer in a few of the Cameo films.
