Cleveland Fire
The Cleveland Fire was a large wildfire in El Dorado County, Northern California, in September and October 1992. The fire began on September 29 and burned for five days, spreading to before it was fully contained on October 4. Two air tanker pilots died in a crash while fighting the fire and dozens of personnel were injured. Forty-one buildings were destroyed. The cost of fighting the fire reached $16 million (equivalent to about $million in when adjusted for inflation), and losses from burned timber and property amounted to $245 million (equivalent to about $million in ). The Michigan-California Lumber Company was an early 20th-century Ponderosa and Sugar pine logging operation in the Sierra Nevada. It is best remembered for the Shay locomotives used to move logs to the sawmill. American River Land and Lumber Company In 1892 the American River Land and Lumber Company built a sawmill in Folsom, California; and a railroad to bring logs cut at Pino Grande, California, to the South Fork American River upstream of Folsom. The Desolation Wilderness is a federally protected wilderness area in the Eldorado National Forest and Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, in El Dorado County, California. Union Valley Reservoir is a reservoir in eastern El Dorado County, California, about northeast of Placerville. The lake is in Eldorado National Forest in the Sierra Nevada at an elevation of . It was formed in by the high earth and rockfill Union Valley Dam on Silver Creek, which is a tributary of the American River. The reservoir is part of the Upper American River Project of the Sacramento Municipal Utility District, a public electric utility, which operates the dam and many other dams in the area.
