''Cleopatra: Original Soundtrack Album'' is the soundtrack from the film of the same name, released by 20th Century Fox Records in 1963. The music of ''Cleopatra'' was composed and conducted by Alex North, and was recorded and produced in 1963. It has been released several times, first as an original vinyl album, in 1963. Later, in 1997, it was released in CD format by Tsunami Records, in Germany, as a ''Limited Edition'' album. The most popular of the releases was the ''Deluxe Edition'', or 2001 Varèse Sarabande Edition, released as a double CD in 2001. Joseph L. Mankiewicz, the film's director, made the unusual gesture, for him, of contributing extensive liner notes for the 1963 Original Soundtrack Album. These notes provide a valuable elucidation of many points in Mankiewicz's conception of ''Cleopatra'' that are unrealized in the version of the film that was released. Alex North
Alex North (born Isadore Soifer, December 4, 1910 – September 8, 1991) was an American composer best known for his many film scores, including ''A Streetcar Named Desire'' (one of the first jazz-based film scores), ''Viva Zapata!'', '' Spartacus'', ''Cleopatra'', and ''Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?'' He was the first composer to receive an Honorary Academy Award, but never won a competitive Oscar despite fifteen nominations. He wrote the music for Unchained Melody as the theme for the prison film '' Unchained'' (1955), It has become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, with over 1,500 recordings made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages. The compact disc (CD) is a digital optical disc data storage format that was co-developed by Philips and Sony to store and play digital audio recordings. John Addison
John Mervyn Addison (16 March 19207 December 1998) was a British composer best known for his film scores. Early life Addison was born in Chobham, Surrey to a father who was a colonel in the Royal Field Artillery, and this influenced the decision to send him to school at Wellington College, Berkshire. His grandfather was Lieut-Colonel George Addison, who played for the Royal Engineers in the 1872 and 1874 FA Cup Finals. At the age of sixteen he entered the Royal College of Music,''The Guardian'' obituary, 15 December 1998 where he studied composition with Gordon Jacob, oboe with Léon Goossens, and clarinet with Frederick Thurston. This education ended in 1939 with service in World War II. Addison served with the British XXX Corps in the 23rd Hussars. He was a tank officer in the Battle of Normandy and wounded at Caen, later participating in Operation Market Garden.
