Clemente Formation
The Clemente Formation is a geologic formation composed of of Ediacaran siltstone, sandstone, quartzite, conglomerate, and minor dolomite. It is exposed in the exposed in the area of Cerro Rajon south of Caborca, northern Sonora, Mexico. It contains an oolitic dolomite marker bed correlated with the Johnnie Formation in Death Valley, California, and preserves an isotopic record of the Shuram excursion.Stewart, J.H., Amaya-Martínez, R., and Palmer, A.R., 2002. Geological Formation
A geological formation, or simply formation, is a body of rock having a consistent set of physical characteristics (lithology) that distinguishes it from adjacent bodies of rock, and which occupies a particular position in the layers of rock exposed in a geographical region (the stratigraphic column). It is the fundamental unit of lithostratigraphy, the study of strata or rock layers. A formation must be large enough that it can be mapped at the surface or traced in the subsurface. Formations are otherwise not defined by the thickness (geology), thickness of their rock strata, which can vary widely. They are usually, but not universally, tabular in form. They may consist of a single lithology (rock type), or of alternating beds of two or more lithologies, or even a heterogeneous mixture of lithologies, so long as this distinguishes them from adjacent bodies of rock. Intraclast
In geology, intraclasts are irregularly-shaped grains that form by syndepositional erosion (i.e. erosion simultaneous with deposition) of partially-lithified sediment. Gravel grade material is generally composed of whole disarticulated or broken skeletal fragments together with sand grade material of whole, disaggregated and broken skeletal debris. Such sediments can contain fragments of early cemented limestones of local origin which are known as intraclasts. Extraclasts are sediments that contain pieces of early cemented limestones of extra-basinal origin. Examples of intraclasts include mudlumps that are torn up from the bottoms of lagoons during storms, hardened desiccated mudflakes produced in intertidal and supratidal environments and fragments broken from cemented deep-sea crusts. Mark McMenamin
Mark A. S. McMenamin (born c. 1957) is an American paleontologist and professor of geology at Mount Holyoke College. He has contributed to the study of the Cambrian explosion and the Ediacaran biota. He is the author of several books, most recently ''Deep Time Analysis'' (2018) and ''Dynamic Paleontology'' (2016). His earlier works include ''The Garden of Ediacara: Discovering the Earliest Complex Life'' (1998), one of the only popular accounts of research on the Ediacaran biota, and ''Science 101: Geology'' (2007). He is credited with co-naming several geological formations in Mexico, describing several new fossil genera and species, and naming the Precambrian supercontinent Rodinia and the superocean Mirovia. In geology, basement and crystalline basement are crystalline rocks lying above the mantle and beneath all other rocks and sediments. They are sometimes exposed at the surface, but often they are buried under miles of rock and sediment. Metamorphic rocks arise from the transformation of existing rock to new types of rock in a process called metamorphism. Sedimentary rocks are types of rock formed by the cementation of sediments—i.e. particles made of minerals (geological detritus) or organic matter (biological detritus)—that have been accumulated or deposited at Earth's surface. Sedimentation is any process that causes these particles to settle in place. Geological detritus originates from weathering and erosion of existing rocks, or from the solidification of molten lava blobs erupted by volcanoes.
