It contains approximately 40–50 species, most of them native to South America, with a few species extending north into Costa Rica and Trinidad. ''Cleistesiopsis'' is an orchid genus in the tribe Pogonieae. Its members were included in ''Cleistes'' until 2009. ''Cleistesiopsis'' is native to the eastern and southeastern United States from New Jersey south to Florida, and west to Kentucky and Louisiana. The common names are rosebud orchid and small spreading pogonia. ''Cleistesiopsis'' is a terrestrial orchid with an underground network of spreading fibrous roots. It is found in small clusters of single flowering stems, each with a single leaf blade about halfway up the 30 – 45 cm stem. A smaller floral bract clasps around the base of the flower and appears as a second smaller leaf blade. The flower has three brown-green sepals spreading upward from the stem. Vanilloideae Genera
Vanilloideae is one of the subfamilies of orchids belonging to the large family Orchidaceae. Lindley (1836) and Garay (1986)Garay,L. (1986), Olim Vanillaceae. Botanical Museum Leaflets. Harvard University 30 : 233-237. treated it as a separate family, Vanillaceae. But their single, incumbent anther and poorly organised pollinia led to their recognition as at best a subgroup of monandrous orchids. From a molecular point of view, this clade is rather a sister to subfamily Epidendroideae and subfamily Orchidoideae in the Orchidaceae, and thus it is today also considered a subfamily. The subfamily Vanilloideae consists of 15 genera and about 180 species, belonging to the tribes Pogonieae and Vanilleae. Louis Claude Marie Richard (19 September 1754 – 6 June 1821) was a French botanist and botanical illustration, botanical illustrator. Biography Richard was born at Versailles (city), Versailles. Between 1781 and 1789 he collected botanical specimens in Central America and the West Indies. On his return he became a professor at the École de médecine in Paris. John Lindley Fellow of the Royal Society, FRS (5 February 1799 – 1 November 1865) was an English botanist, gardener and orchidology, orchidologist. Early years Born in Old Catton, Catton, near Norwich, England, John Lindley was one of four children of George and Mary Lindley. George Lindley was a nurseryman and pomologist and ran a commercial nursery garden. Although he had great horticultural knowledge, the undertaking was not profitable and George lived in a state of indebtedness.
