Claverhouse
Claverhouse (also known as Barns of Claverhouse) is a residential area located on the northern outskirts of Dundee, Scotland with the city centre located 2 miles (3.2 km) from the area. Overview Claverhouse is primarily an affluent residential area and is one of the wealthier areas in Dundee alongside Broughty Ferry and the West End of Dundee. The area is surrounded by natural parkland, reservoirs and a burn and is a popular area for golf and equestrian as well. High end housing communities which feature houses and villas are located within the area. The Dighty Burn runs past through Claverhouse underneath a bridge from the west which continues to flow to the east. Located near to Claverhouse is Mains Castle anCaird Parkas well as the A90 road northbound to Aberdeen through Forfar Road. John Graham, 1st Viscount Dundee
John Graham, 7th of Claverhouse, 1st Viscount Dundee (21 July 1648 – 27 July 1689) was a Scottish soldier and nobleman, a Tory and an Episcopalian. He was responsible for policing southwest Scotland during and after the religious unrest and rebellion of the late 17th century, and went on to lead the Jacobite rising of 1689. After his death, Presbyterian historians dubbed him "Bluidy Clavers". Contemporary evidence for the fairness of this soubriquet in the Covenanting tradition is mixed. Tales of the Covenanters and Covenanter monuments hold Claverhouse directly responsible for the deaths of adherents of that movement. Dighty Burn
The Dighty Burn, also known as Dighty Water or Dichty Water, is a burn or stream 20 kilometres (12 mi) in length that flows through the north and east of Dundee, Scotland. Course The burn forms to the west of Dundee as the Lundie Burn in the Sidlaw Hills then runs north of Piperdam and then into the northwest of Dundee through Bridgefoot, Trottick, Claverhouse, Mill o' Mains, Fintry, Douglas, Claypotts and then between Broughty Ferry and Monifeith where it flows into the Firth of Tay. History The water from the Dighty Burn was used as a power source for the mill buildings at the Claverhouse Bleachworks factory. Trottick Mill Ponds
Trottick Mill Ponds and Nature Reserve is a local nature reserve located in the Trottick area in Dundee, Scotland. The nature reserve connects with the Dighty Burn and is voluntarily operated by Countryside Rangers as well as the Scottish Wildlife Trust and owned by Dundee City Council. History Trottick Mill Ponds was originally created to be used as a water source for the nearby Claverhouse Bleachworks factory which was used for the cleaning and drying processes for the linen production in Dundee back in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Sluice gates were installed to control the flow of water at the reserve and the use of a water wheel allowed water from the Dighty Burn to be pushed through into the reserve. The nature reserve is now popular among local residents and visitors to Dundee and is also used for educational purposes as well. Dundee East is a constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom (at Westminster). Joseph Martin FitzPatrick (born 1 April 1967) is a Scottish politician who is a member of the Scottish National Party (SNP), and has been the Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for Dundee City West since the 2007.
