''Claudine'' is a 1974 American romantic comedy-drama film, directed by John Berry. ''Claudine'' was written by Lester Pine and Tina Pine, produced by Third World Cinema, and distributed by 20th Century Fox, starring James Earl Jones, Diahann Carroll, and Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs. The film was released on April 22, 1974, grossing about $6 million, a modest hit for the times. It was praised for showing a new dimension in black cinema during the height of blaxploitation. Plot The film tells the story of Claudine Price, a single black Harlem mother, living on welfare with six children, who finds love with a garbage collector, Rupert "Roop" Marshall. ''Claudine'' is a Gladys Knight & the Pips album, written and produced by Curtis Mayfield. The disc is the soundtrack album for the 1974 20th Century Fox motion picture '' Claudine'', starring James Earl Jones and Diahann Carroll. The album was released in March 1974 on the Buddah label. The first single release, " On and On", reached number 2 on the R&B chart and number5 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 chart. A second single, "Make Yours a Happy Home", was released two years later in 1976 and was a moderate hit, peaking at number 13 R&B and number 35 on the UK Singles Chart. The album also included one instrumental, "Claudine Theme". The album was also their third of five R&B albums chart-toppers. Also included is a cover of Mayfield's "The Makings of You". Claudine (book Series)
The ''Claudine'' series consists of four early novels by French authors Colette and Henry Gauthier-Villars, published 1900–1904. Written in diary form, they describe the growth to maturity of a young girl, Claudine. Aged fifteen at the beginning of the first book, '' Claudine à l'école'', the series describes her education and experiences as she grows up. All the books are written in first-person with the first three having Claudine herself as the narrator. The last in the series, ''Claudine s'en va'', introduces a new narrator, Annie. The novels were written in the late 19th century in collaboration with Colette's first husband, the writer Henry Gauthier-Villars, better known by his pen name "Willy". There has been much speculation over the degree of involvement of both Colette and Willy in the writing of the Claudine novels, particularly as Willy was known for often using ghostwriters. ''Claudine'' was launched at Calcutta in 1811. She made two voyages transporting convicts, one to Van Diemen's Land in 1821 and one to New South Wales in 1829. In between, she made one voyage under charter to the British East India Company. Her captain deliberately grounded her in November 1840 to survive a storm, but she was able to return to service. She was broken up in 1849. Career ''Claudine'' initially traded as a country ship and then to India under a license from the East India Company. Later she became a free trader.
