Classic Motorcycle Mecca is a motorcycle museum in Invercargill in Southland, New Zealand. The museum collection includes over 325 classic motorcycles of mostly British and American makes, with some German, Italian and Japanese models. It is the largest display of motorcycles in New Zealand. The museum is operated as a tourism venture by Transport World, an Invercargill-based business. History Most of the motorcycles in the collection were originally acquired by Tom and Heather Sturgess and housed in a purpose-built museum in Nelson from December 2014. However, in February 2016, Sturgess announced that he had undergone major surgery, and that the collection of almost 300 motorcycles, which had been open to the public for a year, was to revert to being a private collection. In May 2016, Transport World in Invercargill purchased the collection for relocation to new premises in Invercargill. Phelon & Moore
Phelon & Moore manufactured motorcycles in Cleckheaton, Yorkshire, England from 1904 to 1967, particularly those under the Panther marque. They became identified with a design of motorcycle which had a large sloping 40-degree single-cylinder engine as a Stressed member engine, stressed member of the frame. This design spanned the entire history of the company, starting with a 500 cc model and ending with a 645 cc model. Precursor The sloping stressed member concept was patented in 1901 by Joah ("John") Carver Phelon and his nephew Harry Rayner (Patent GB190103516). Phelon & Rayner made the first chain-driven motorcycle in 1900. The Phelon & Rayner 1.75 hp machines were only in production until 1903, but they also licensed the design to Humber Limited, who produced motorcycles based on it from 1902 until 1906. Vincent Motorcycles was a British manufacturer of motorcycles from 1928 to 1955. The business was established by Phil Vincent, Philip Vincent who bought an existing manufacturing name HRD Motorcycles, HRD, initially renaming it as ''Vincent HRD'', producing his own motorcycles as HRD did previously with engines purchased as complete assemblies from other companies. Wanganui Chronicle
''The Whanganui Chronicle'' is New Zealand's oldest newspaper. Based in Whanganui, it celebrated 160 years of publishing in September 2016. It is the main daily paper for the Whanganui, Ruapehu and Rangitīkei regions, including the towns of Patea, Waverley, Whanganui, Bulls, Marton, Raetihi, Ohakune and National Park. History Local resident Henry Stokes first proposed the paper for Petre, as the town was then called, but initial publication was held back by lack of equipment. As no printing press was available, Stokes approached the technical master at Wanganui Collegiate School, Rev. E Hayes and Sons is a hardware store and automotive display in Invercargill, in the Southland Region of New Zealand. The store was founded in 1932 by Irving Hayes, a descendant of Ernest Hayes, a New Zealand engineer and inventor who founded the Hayes Engineering works in Oturehua, Central Otago, and developed agricultural tools for farms. The hardware store business has remained in family ownership through four generations. The store became part of the nationwide Hammer Hardware franchise group in 1999. Products on offer in the store include hardware, outdoor power equipment, clothing/footwear, homeware and giftware. Burt Munro
Herbert James "Burt" Munro (''Bert'' in his youth; 25 March 1899 – 6 January 1978) was a motorcycle racer from New Zealand, famous for setting an under-1,000 cc world record, at Bonneville, on August 26, 1967. This record still stands; Munro was 68 and was riding a 47-year-old machine when he set his last record. Working from his home in Invercargill, he spent 20 years highly modifying his 1920 Indian Scout (motorcycle) that he had bought that same year. Munro set his first New Zealand speed record in 1938 and later set seven more. He travelled to compete at the Bonneville Salt Flats, attempting to set world speed records. Britten Motorcycle Company is a Christchurch, New Zealand motorcycle manufacturer created by John Britten in 1992. The Britten V1000 is a handbuilt race motorcycle designed and built by John Britten and a group of friends in Christchurch, New Zealand, during the early 1990s. The bike went on to win the Battle of the Twins in Daytona International Speedway's Daytona Bike Week festivities in the United States and set several world speed records. John Britten
John Kenton Britten (1 August 1950 – 5 September 1995) was a New Zealand mechanical engineer who designed a world-record-setting motorcycle with innovative features and materials. Biography John Britten was born to Bruce and Ruvae Britten in Christchurch at 10 minutes to midnight. His twin sister Marguerite was born just after midnight, so although they were twins they celebrated their birthdays on different dates. Being dyslexic, he needed to have exam questions read to him at school and during his tertiary education, and his answers recorded by a writer, but that didn't stop him from developing into a remarkable engineer and architectural designer. Peugeot Motocycles
Peugeot is a French manufacturer of scooters and small motorcycles. Since February 2023, the company has been controlled by the German holding company Mutares. History Peugeot built their first motorcycle in 1898 with a De Dion-Bouton engine mounted on the rear wheel. This model was shown at the 1898 Paris Exhibition but was not put into production.
