Classic International Cruises was a British-Australian owned shipping company operating five luxury cruise ships, most notably their flagship, the rebuilt ocean liner MV Azores, MS Athena. The company only operated cruise ships that are former ocean liners, the classic ships of their day (hence the company's name). History Classic International Cruises was seemingly founded in 1985, with the purchase of the MV Funchal, MV ''Funchal'' as the Arcalia Shipping Company Ltd, which eventually became Classic International. They operated the one ship until 1994, when they bought the ''Princess Danae''. The ''Princess Danae'' entered service with an all-white hull and a sailing ship logo on her funnel. ''Funchal'' was given a yellow and blue striped funnel and a white hull, but by 2000 her livery was changed to what now all Classic International ships have. MV ''Astoria'' is a ship that was constructed as the transatlantic ocean liner ''Stockholm'' for Swedish American Line, and rebuilt as a cruise ship in 1993. Ordered in 1944, and commenced service in 1948, at 73 years old, she is the oldest passenger liner still sailing in deep water routes. Arion (; grc-gre, Ἀρίων; fl. c. 700 BC) was a kitharode in ancient Greece, a Dionysiac poet credited with inventing the dithyramb. The islanders of Lesbos claimed him as their native son, but Arion found a patron in Periander, tyrant of Corinth. Although notable for his musical inventions, Arion is chiefly remembered for the fantastic myth of his kidnapping by pirates and miraculous rescue by dolphins, a folktale motif. Origins Arion was a native of Methymna in Lesbos, and, according to some mythological accounts, a son of Cyclon or of Poseidon and the nymph Oncaea. Aliağa is a town and a district of Izmir Province in the Aegean Region of Turkey. The town is situated at about north of Izmir. Aliağa has a large port, mainly for oil and bulk cargo. Its economic activity is based on tourism, shipbreaking, and an oil refinery. Overview and history Aliağa lies in the heart of ancient Aeolia. The MS ''Princess Danae'' was a cruise liner. The ship was designed by Harland & Wolff as a freighter in Belfast built and ran in 1954 as ''Port Melbourne'', a fast cargo liner for Port Line's UK-Australia express service. She was planned to be rebuilt as a car ferry, the ''Therisos Express'', but instead became the cruise ship ''Danae''. In later years, she was named ''Starlight Express'', ''Baltica'', and then ''Princess Danae''.From 1994 until 2012, the ship was operated by Classic International Cruises as the ''Princess Danae''. In late summer of 2012, the ship was detained in Dublin, Ireland for the non-payment of a fuel bill.
