Caledonian Railway 19 Class
Caledonian Railway 0-4-4T steam locomotives were built for the Caledonian Railway, in Scotland, over many years. Most survived into London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) ownership in 1923 and some into British Railways (BR) ownership in 1948. Designers included Dugald Drummond, John Lambie, John F. McIntosh and William Pickersgill. A development of the Pickersgill design was introduced by the LMS in 1925. Belgian Railways Class 19
Class 19 is a class of electric locomotives operated by NMBS/SNCB, the state train operator of Belgium. During 1993 Class 21 locomotive 2130 was converted for use as a test bed for the development of future class 13. It was renumbered into Class 19 as 1901 for the testing program and was the only member of the class. The traction motors were replaced with asynchronous motors. It also gained a transformer that let it work under 25000 volts, 50 Hz AC and French signalling and train protection systems. The 3000 Volts DC capability was retained. The reason for this was because Class 13 was to be a dual voltage locomotive running on the same voltages with the same type of motors. 1901 operated into Lille Flandres station in France many times as part of the testing process. By 2001 the testing was completed and it was restored to standard with its original number of 2130. In 2014, NMBS/SNCB decided to stop the first half of Class 21 (2101-2130). Part of this was because they ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

British Rail Class 19
Class 19 is the name given to an experimental railway locomotive that was constructed using a Mark 3 DVT. The locomotive is part of a project funded by the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) to test the viability of combining hydrostatic transmission with a form of regenerative braking that can reduce engine emissions. Hydrostatic transmissions have been used previously for rail vehicles, but only for slow-speed track maintenance vehicles and similar, not for mainline locomotives. Diesel-hydraulic locomotives instead use a hydrodynamic, i.e. torque converter, transmission. History In 2017, the RSSB announced that it planned to fund the development of an experimental rail vehicle in conjunction with Artemis Intelligent Power, a developmental company specialising in hydraulic machines. The intention of the project was to develop a rail vehicle that could store braking energy, which could then be released during acceleration. It would be powered by diesel engines as the prime m ...
