Clarry McNeil
Clarence Alexander McNeil (6 August 1912 – 7 September 2006) was a rugby league player who represented New Zealand national rugby league team, New Zealand at rugby league in three matches on their 1938 tour of Australia, becoming the 262nd player to represent New Zealand. He also played one match for Auckland, one for the North Island, and two for Wellington. McNeil played his club rugby league for the Mt Albert club in Auckland (34 games), and the St. George (14 games) and Randwick (7 games) clubs in Wellington. Early life Clarry McNeil was born on August 6, 1912, in Ohinemutu, Rotorua, in the Bay of Plenty. His parents were Winifred McNeil (née Patton) (1891–1973), and Alexander George McNeil (1884–1918). Ohinemutu or Ōhinemutu is a suburb in Rotorua, New Zealand. It includes a living Māori village and the original settlement of Rotorua. Demographics The statistical area of Kuirau, which corresponds to Ohinemutu, covers and had an estimated population of as of with a population density of people per km2. Kuirau had a population of 1,065 at the 2018 New Zealand census, an increase of 144 people (15.6%) since the 2013 census, and an increase of 138 people (14.9%) since the 2006 census. Ellerslie Racecourse
Ellerslie Racecourse is the main racecourse in Auckland, New Zealand, for thoroughbred racehorses. It is an undulating, grass circuit in the suburb of Ellerslie, with a circumference of just under 1,900 metres. Racing is conducted in a clockwise (right-handed) direction. History Horses have raced at Ellerslie since 1857 when Robert Graham hosted a race meeting on his property, on the site which is now Ellerslie Racecourse. The Auckland Racing club then purchased thirty-six hectares of land from Graham in 1872 on which the course is situated. The first race meeting of the Auckland Racing Club was held at Ellerslie on 25 May 1874. At this time the racecourse was a considerable distance outside the city and it took Aucklanders up to several hours to get to the course by carriage. Richmond Rovers
The Richmond Rovers Rugby League Club is a rugby league club based in Grey Lynn, New Zealand. The premier team is called the Richmond Bulldogs and compete in Auckland Rugby League's Fox Memorial competition. Early history The club was formed in 1913 by employees at Mr. B. W. Davis' Boot Factory and Elliott's, following a scratch game in 1912. The club was originally affiliated with the Eden Ramblers club. In 1883 the land surrounding Grey Lynn Park was subdivided and the houses were built. The area that is now Grey Lynn Park was too steep to build houses on and so, in 1914, the area was drained and flattened so sport could be played. Flood lights were installed at the park in the 1950s. Richmond enjoyed considerable success in the middle decades of the 1900s. Gordon Campbell (rugby League)
Gordon Campbell was a rugby league player who represented New Zealand in 2 tests in 1932 against England. Campbell played in the position of hooker. In the process he became the 223rd player to represent New Zealand. Playing career Richmond Rovers junior and senior debut Gordon Campbell played for Richmond Rovers as a junior. In 1924 he was a member of their 3rd grade team. In 1925 he had moved into their 2nd grade side who won the championship. He made his senior debut on April 24 in a match against Grafton Athletic at the Auckland Domain. It was reported in the Auckland Star that “Richmond, in Prentice, Stevenson, and Campbell, three of last year’s junior players, have a trio of good young fellows who will further improve on their play”. Claude List, born Victor Claude Wilschefski (2 December 1902 – 17 April 1959), was a rugby league player who represented New Zealand in the 1920s and 1930s. He represented New Zealand in one test match against England in 1928 and three more tests against England in 1932. In the process he became the 190th player to represent New Zealand. He also represented Auckland 24 times from 1925 to 1933, and the North Island side three times from 1927 to 1932. Wilfred Thomson Hassan (9 February 1910 – 10 September 1967) was a rugby league footballer who represented New Zealand in 1932 in a test match against England thus becoming Kiwi #221. He was also a champion diver and was Auckland diving champion on several occasions and New Zealand champion in 1934 and 1935. Early life Wilfred was born on 9 February 1910 in Wingate, Durham, England, the son of Patrick Columkill (Colin) Hassan, who was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1886. Carlaw Park
Carlaw Park was a multi-purpose stadium in Parnell, a central suburb of Auckland, New Zealand. It neighboured the Auckland Domain's Northern end. It was primarily used for rugby league and had a peak spectator capacity of around 28,000 in the 1930s, though this fell to around 17,000 by the time the ground was closed in 2002. History The stadium's grandstands and terraces were built in 1916, and it became the home of rugby league in Auckland from 1921. City Rovers
The City Newton Dragons are a defunct New Zealand rugby league club that was based at Victoria Park, Auckland. The club was created in 1948 by a merger of two original clubs, the City Rovers and Newton Rangers. Both the Rovers and the Rangers participated in the inaugural Auckland Rugby League competition in 1910. In 2004, the club was absorbed by the Ponsonby Ponies, who play a match in the City Newton colours annually to keep the heritage of the club alive.
