Clarence H. Carter (Wisconsin Politician)
Clarence H. Carter (May 19, 1874 – May 7, 1958) was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly. Carter was born in Vernon County, Wisconsin. He went to the public schools and to high school. Carter was in the insurance and tobacco buying business. Carter was first elected to the Assembly in 1916. Other positions he held include Chairman of the Vernon County Board of Supervisors. He was a Republican. In 1946, Carter moved to DeForest, Wisconsin from Readstown. Wisconsin State Assembly
The Wisconsin State Assembly is the lower house of the Wisconsin Legislature. Together with the smaller Wisconsin Senate, the two constitute the legislative branch of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The Assembly is controlled by the Republican Party, as it has been for 28 of the past 30 years (only 2009-2010 are exceptions). Members of the Assembly are elected to two-year terms during the fall elections. In the event of a vacancy in an Assembly seat between elections, a special election may be held to fill the position. The Wisconsin Constitution limits the size of the State Assembly to between 54 and 100 members inclusive. Since 1973, the state has been divided into 99 Assembly districts apportioned amongst the state based on population as determined by the decennial census, for a total of 99 representatives. Vernon County is a county in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 30,714. Its county seat is Viroqua. History Vernon County was renamed from Bad Ax County on March 22, 1862. Bad Ax County had been created on March 1, 1851, from territory that had been part of Richland and Crawford counties. The name ''Vernon'' was chosen to reflect the county's green fields of wheat and to evoke Mount Vernon. DeForest ( ) is a village in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States, along the Yahara River. The population was 10,811 at the 2020 census. A suburb north of Madison, it is part of the Madison metropolitan area. History Before European settlement, the area now known as DeForest was home to Native American peoples, notably the Ho-Chunk Nation. The Wisconsin River valley and its tributaries provided vital resources and travel routes for these early inhabitants. DeForest traces its origins to 1854 when Isaac DeForest, a Belgian-American settler, arrived in the area and acquired extensive land holdings primarily for wheat farming.
