Clare Qualmann
Clare Qualmann is a British multi-media performance artist based in London, UK. She is a senior lecturer in performing arts at the University of East London and also teaches at London Metropolitan University. Career Qualmann's work uses a range of participatory methods to explore the routines and narratives of everyday life. A large body of her work focuses on the practice of walking as a way to interrogate the familiarity of place and has been described as “a kind of anti-dérive”. Qualmann is a member of walkwalkwalk with Gail Burton and Serena Korda, who practice "'an archaeology of the familiar and forgotten," organising public walks through familiar places deemed marginal or overlooked. As a solo artist Qualmann has further developed her walking practice. Qualmann is a founding member of the international Walking Artists Network, created in 2007. Performance art is an artwork or art exhibition created through actions executed by the artist or other participants. London Metropolitan University, commonly known as London Met, is a public research university in London, England. Dérive
The ''dérive'' (, "drift") is a revolutionary strategy originally put forward in the "Theory of the Dérive" (1956) by Guy Debord, a member at the time of the Letterist International. Debord defines the ''dérive'' as "a mode of experimental behaviour linked to the conditions of urban society: a technique of rapid passage through varied ambiances." It is an unplanned journey through a landscape, usually urban, in which participants drop their everyday relations and "let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the encounters they find there". Walkwalkwalk
Walkwalkwalk (2005–2010) is a British artist collective consisting of Gail Burton, Serena Korda and Clare Qualmann. Based in London, their work focuses on their own routine walks in the Bethnal Green neighborhood of East London, as well as overlooked and forgotten spaces. Walkwalkwalk identify their move to walking as in part a response to monetary requirement and the financial restrictions present of living in London. Their work looks to bring attention to overlooked and forgotten spaces and create alternative modes of engagement with the city. Their work draws on a sources ranging from the never completed 1921 season of Dada excursions to Iain Sinclair's psychogeographic explorations in London. Serena Korda
Serena Korda (born 1979) is a British visual artist. She has made work across a number of disciplines including performance, sculpture, ceramics and public art. Her work is interactive and encourages people to explore everyday rituals found from histories and conversations with one another. She encourages her audience to interact and be involved in creating these shared experiences that would usually be passed by. Early life and education Serena Korda was born in 1979 in London, England. She studied at Middlesex University, and received her Master of Arts degree in Printmaking from the Royal College of Art, RCA, in 2009. While attending the RCA, Korda won the Deutsche Bank Art Award (2009). Walking Artists Network
The Walking Artists Network (WAN) is an international network dedicated to walking as a critical and artistic practice; it reflects the growth and increased interest in walking art. It is based at the University of East London's Centre for Performing Arts Development and contains a network of over 600 members from across the globe, though predominantly based in the United Kingdom. The network maintains an active email discussion community through JISCmail. Founding WAN originated in late 2007 when a small group of artists in central London invited ‘all those who are interested in walking as a critical spatial practice’ to its first meeting. It was further developed when Clare Qualmann and Mark Hunter successfully bid for Arts and Humanities Research Council funding in 2011. Deveron Projects, formerly Deveron Arts, is a United Kingdom arts organisation based in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland that hosts international artists from a variety of disciplines to collaborate with the town community. Deveron Projects follows a '50/50' approach, which gives equal attention to impact on the local community and impact on the international art scene.
