Clare Lucy Marx
Dame Clare Lucy Marx (15 March 1954 – 27 November 2022) was a British surgeon who was president of the Royal College of Surgeons of England from July 2014 to July 2017, the first woman to hold the position, and former chair of the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management. From January 2019 until July 2021, Dame Clare was chair of the General Medical Council, the first woman appointed to that role. She had worked as an orthopaedic surgeon at Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust from 1993. Personal life Marx was born in Coventry on 15 March 1954, the daughter of Francis Ulrich Marx, a German industrial chemist, and Brenda (Johnston) Marx, a teacher and magistrate. She grew up in Warwick and, later, Cheltenham. She decided to become a doctor after a work experience placement at Coventry Hospital. Royal College Of Surgeons Of England
The Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS England) is an independent professional body and registered charity that promotes and advances standards of surgery, surgical care for patients, and regulates surgery and dentistry in England and Wales. The college is located at Lincoln's Inn Fields in London. Order Of The British Empire
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding valuable service in a wide range of useful activities. It comprises five classes of awards across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a Orders, decorations, and medals of the United Kingdom#Modern honours, knight if male or a dame (title), dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with the order, but are not members of it. Sir Norman Stanley Williams (born 15 March 1947) is a British surgeon and former President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (2011–14). History Born in Leeds, he was educated at Roundhay School, Leeds, and at the London Hospital Medical College (University of London). He attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), as a Fulbright scholar in 1980. Professional career In 1982, he was appointed Senior Lecturer/Honorary Consultant Surgeon at the University of Leeds and the Leeds General Infirmary.
