Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species on 9 August 2017. Members of this genus may be referred to by the common name sea emerald. Cladophorales
Cladophorales are an order of green algae, in the class Ulvophyceae. The earliest known representative is ''Proterocladus antiquus'' from the Mesoproterozoic-Neoproterozoic boundary in North China. The order Cladophorales consists of filamentous macroalgae attached to a surface. The filaments are uniseriate (one cell thick) with multinucleate cells, and are unbranched or profusely branched. In some taxa, the filaments are modified into giant single cells, three-dimensional networks of branches, or pseudoparenchymatic clusters. Currently, Cladophorales has an expanded circumscription that includes Siphonocladales. Classification has been difficult, because the simple morphology has led to convergent evolution Convergent evolution is the independent evolution of similar features in species of different periods or epochs in time. Convergent evolution creates analogous structures that have similar form or function but were not present in the last comm .... The current hypothes ... Cladophora
''Cladophora'' is a genus of reticulated filamentous green algae in the class Ulvophyceae. They may be referred to as reticulated algae, branching algae, or blanket weed. The genus has a worldwide distribution and is harvested for use as a food and medicine. Description and appearance ''Cladophora'' coloring is bright green which reflects the chlorophyll a, and chlorophyll b, which are similar to higher plant ratios and that also contains β-carotene and xanthophylls.Michalak, I., Messyasz, B. Concise review of Cladophora spp.: macroalgae of commercial interest. J Appl Phycol 33, 133–166 (2021). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10811-020-02211-3 The thallus branches are smaller than the main axis, dichotomous, rough in texture, and have narrow tips. Temperature, water currents and waves affect their metabolism and morphology, and branching patterns. At 15–20 °C branches appear alternate, they can also appear completely absent in temperatures below 25 °C. ''Cladophora'' form ... Family (biology)
Family (, : ) is one of the eight major hierarchical taxonomic ranks in Linnaean taxonomy. It is classified between order and genus. A family may be divided into subfamilies, which are intermediate ranks between the ranks of family and genus. The official family names are Latin in origin; however, popular names are often used: for example, walnut trees and hickory trees belong to the family Juglandaceae, but that family is commonly referred to as the "walnut family". The delineation of what constitutes a family—or whether a described family should be acknowledged—is established and decided upon by active taxonomists. There are not strict regulations for outlining or acknowledging a family, yet in the realm of plants, these classifications often rely on both the vegetative and reproductive characteristics of plant species. Taxonomists frequently hold varying perspectives on these descriptions, leading to a lack of widespread consensus within the scientific community ...
