Civilisées
Civilisées (''A Civilized People'' or ''Al Mutahaddirat'') is a 1999 Lebanese dark comedy drama film written and directed by filmmaker Randa Chahal Sabag. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival on September 4, 1999 and later screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film was also screened at the Arab Film Festival in San Francisco, California. Premise During the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990), many well-off Lebanese families fled the country to look for their personal interests internationally, leaving their residences under the care of maids and laborers from Egypt, the Philippines and Sri Lanka. The film draws a portrait of a war-tormented Beirut neighborhood, and the love between a Muslim militia fighter and a Christian maid. The 56th annual Venice International Film Festival was held between 1 and 11 September 1999. Stanley Kubrick's final film ''Eyes Wide Shut'' was the festival's opening film. Yugoslavian filmmaker Emir Kusturica was the Jury President for the main competition. The Golden Lion was awarded to '' Not One Less'' directed by Zhang Yimou. Daniel Toscan du Plantier (7 April 1941 – 11 February 2003) was a French film producer. Educated at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques he became advertising manager for the ''France Soir'' daily newspaper in 1966 and between 1975 and 1985 was director-general of the Gaumont Film Company, and president of Unifrance, an organisation for promoting French films, from 1988 until his death. Jalila Baccar
Jalila Baccar (; born 1952) is a Tunisian playwright and actor. Early life and education Baccar was born in Tunis on 23 November 1952. She became interested in drama while at school. Career When she graduated from school she joined a regional theatre company in Gafsa, an oasis and mining community in the south-west of Tunisia. She and the company's co-director tried to modernise the company but met with resistance both from their fellow actors and from the authorities. They moved back to Tunis in 1976 and established their own company, Almasrah al-jadid: The New Theatre, the first independent professional theatre company in Tunisia. In 1993 Baccar and Jaïbi established a new company, Familia. Their play ''Junun'' (''Dementia'') was staged at Avignon in the 2002 Festival. Human Rights Watch Film Festival is an annual film festival held by Human Rights Watch organization in more than 20 countries which previews human rights films and videos in commercial and archival theaters and on public and cable television. This film festival was established in 1988, in part to mark the 10th anniversary of the founding of Human Rights Watch. After 3 years, it was resumed in 1991 and was presented annually until it ceased operations in 2024. Néstor Almendros
Néstor Almendros Cuyás, (30 October 1930 – 4 March 1992) was a Spanish cinematographer. He was one of the most highly appraised contemporary cinematographers, having a working collaboration with filmmakers François Truffaut, Éric Rohmer and Robert Benton, while winning an Oscar for Best Cinematography for Terrence Malick's '' Days of Heaven''. Early life Néstor Almendros Cuyás was born in Barcelona, Spain, but at the age of 18, he moved to Cuba to join his exiled anti-Francisco Franco father. In Havana, he wrote film reviews.
