This is a list of civil parishes in the ceremonial counties of England, ceremonial county of Essex, England. There are 307 civil parishes. The former Thurrock Urban District, Benfleet Urban District, Harlow Urban District and Clacton Urban District are unparished. Parts of the former Basildon Urban District, Braintree and Bocking Urban District, Brentwood Urban District, Municipal Borough of Colchester, Colchester Municipal Borough, Chelmsford, Chelmsford Municipal Borough and County Borough of Southend-on-Sea, Southend-on-Sea County Borough are also unparished. Civil Parish
In England, a civil parish is a type of administrative parish used for local government. It is a territorial designation which is the lowest tier of local government. Civil parishes can trace their origin to the ancient system of parishes, which for centuries were the principal unit of secular and religious administration in most of England and Wales. Civil and religious parishes were formally split into two types in the 19th century and are now entirely separate. Civil parishes in their modern form came into being through the Local Government Act 1894 ( 56 & 57 Vict. c. 73), which established elected parish councils to take on the secular functions of the parish vestry. A civil parish can range in size from a sparsely populated rural area with fewer than a hundred inhabitants, to a large town with a population in excess of 100,000. Epping And Ongar Rural District
Epping and Ongar Rural District was a rural district in the county of Essex, England from 1955 to 1974. Creation It was created in 1955 by the merger of the disbanded Ongar Rural District and most of the disbanded Epping Rural District, except the civil parishes of Great Parndon, Harlow, Latton, Little Parndon and Netteswell, which were largely transferred to the newly created Harlow Urban District reflecting its new town status. Ardleigh
Ardleigh is a village and civil parish in Essex, England. It is situated approximately northeast from the centre of Colchester and northeast from the county town of Chelmsford. History Ardleigh appears in Domesday Book of 1086, when it is described as a holding of Geoffrey de Mandeville. The area includes a number of smallholdings founded after the First World War by the Land Settlement Association. Though the Great Eastern Main Line passes close to the village, the railway station closed in November 1967. Transport and geography The closest railway station is Manningtree, northeast. The village is on the A137 road, a route from Colchester to Ipswich, Suffolk. Ardleigh Reservoir is less than to the southwest. Maldon District
Maldon District is a local government district in Essex, England. The district is managed by ''Maldon District Council'', which is based in Maldon, the largest town in the district. The district also includes the town of Burnham-on-Crouch and numerous villages, including Heybridge, Wickham Bishops, Southminster, Tolleshunt D'Arcy and Tollesbury. The district covers the Dengie peninsula to the south of Maldon and the Thurstable Hundred area to the north of the Blackwater Estuary, a total area of 358.78 km2. Maldon Rural District
Maldon (, locally ) is a town and civil parish on the Blackwater Estuary in Essex, England. It is the seat of the Maldon District and starting point of the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation. It is known for Maldon Sea Salt which is produced in the area. In 2011 the parish had a population of 14,220 and the district had a population of 61,700. History Early and medieval history The place-name ''Maldon'' is first attested in 913 in the ''Anglo-Saxon Chronicle'', where it appears as ''Maeldun''. Maldon's name comes from ''mǣl'', meaning 'monument or cross', and ''dūn'' meaning 'hill', so translates as 'monument hill'. East Saxons settled the area in the 5th century and the area to the south is still known as the Dengie Peninsula after the Dæningas. Althorne
Althorne is a village and civil parish in Essex, England. It is located east-southeast from the county town and city of Chelmsford. The village is in the district of Maldon district and in the parliamentary constituency of Maldon & East Chelmsford. The village has its own Parish Council. The civil parish has a population of 1,159. Althorne is on the Dengie peninsula, about 5 km (3 miles) north-west of Burnham-on-Crouch. Tendring District
Tendring District is a Non-metropolitan district, local government district in north-east Essex, England. Its council is based in Clacton-on-Sea, the largest town. Other towns are Brightlingsea, Harwich, Frinton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze. The district borders the City of Colchester to the west and the Babergh District of Suffolk, across the estuary of the River Stour, Suffolk, River Stour, to the north. Tendring Rural District
Tendring is a village and civil parish in Essex. It gives its name to the Tendring District and before that the Tendring Hundred. Its name was given to the larger groupings because it was at the centre, not because it was larger than the other settlements. The 1086 Domesday Book records the name as ''Tenderinga'' and in 1242 the Pipe Rolls mention it as ''Terring''. In 2011 the parish had a population of 736 and the district had a population of 138,048. The linear village straddles the B1035 from Manningtree to Thorpe-le-Soken. The parish includes the settlements of Goose Green, Tendring Green and Tendring Heath. The church is dedicated to St Edmund. The Tendring Union Workhouse was located at Tendring Heath. Alresford ( or ) is a village and electoral ward in Essex, England. It is centred southeast of Colchester and is northeast from the county town of Chelmsford. The village and its civil parish are the district of Tendring. The local primary school is Alresford Primary School (~150 pupils, ages 4–11) and the village has a pre-school and church.
