Civic Unity Party (Azerbaijan)
The Civic Unity Party () was an Azerbaijani political party established in 1999 in Moscow by the former President of Azerbaijan Ayaz Mutallibov. After the 2000 parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan, the party split between into two fractions: one led by Ayaz Mutallibov and the other led by Igbal Agazade. The latter fraction later formed the Party of Hope (). In 2003, Mutallibov split from CUP, joining the Social Democratic Party of Azerbaijan as its chairman. From then on, CUP was led by Sabir Hajiyev and participated in 2005 parliamentary elections, gaining 1 out 125 seats in the National Assembly of Azerbaijan. Party Of Hope (Azerbaijan)
The Azerbaijan Hope Party () or Ümid Party is a political party that was first registered in Azerbaijan in 1993. Its political stance is center-right, promoting liberal and democratic ideals. The party has regional branches in 65 regions of Azerbaijan and some 5,000 members. History The Ümid Party was first registered in 1993. In December 2002, Iqbal Agazade left the Civic Unity Party (CUP) and became leader of the Ümid Party. Ilham Heydar Oghlu Aliyev (born 24 December 1961) is an Azerbaijani politician who has been the fourth president of Azerbaijan since 2003. He is also the leader of the New Azerbaijan Party since 2005. National Assembly Of Azerbaijan
The National Assembly (), also transliterated as Milli Mejlis, is the legislative branch of government in Azerbaijan. The unicameral National Assembly has 125 deputies: previously 100 members were elected for five-year terms in single-seat constituencies and 25 members were elected by proportional representation; as of the latest election, however, all 125 deputies are returned from single-member constituencies. The Assembly nominally has powers under the Azerbaijan Constitution, but in practice power is heavily concentrated in Ilham Aliyev, the President of Azerbaijan. 2005 Azerbaijan Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Azerbaijan on 6 November 2005. They pitted candidates of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party (NAP) against opposition led by the Azadlıq (Freedom) bloc of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party, Musavat and the Azerbaijan Democratic Party. The NAP won 61 of the 125 seats. The elections were not free and fair. Opposition parties were intimidated during the election, campaign workers for opposition parties were imprisoned, and there were allegations of vote-rigging. The coverage by media, whether state-run or private, was overwhelmingly pro-government. Dissident media stations were shut down and journalists were repressed. Freedom of assembly was restricted, preventing opposition parties from holding rallies. Workers were threatened with dismissal unless they voted for the incumbent government. Ayaz Mutallibov
Ayaz Niyazi oghlu Mutallibov (12 May 1938 – 27 March 2022) was an Azerbaijani politician who served as the first president of Azerbaijan. He was the last leader of Soviet Azerbaijan, and first President of Azerbaijan from 18 May 1990 until 6 March 1992 and from 14 May until 18 May 1992. He rose through the ranks of the Azerbaijan Communist Party during Soviet Azerbaijan before becoming leader of the party in 1990. Later that year, the Supreme Soviet of Azerbaijan SSR elected Mutallibov as the first President of Azerbaijan SSR.
