Ciudad Juárez Migrant Center Fire
On 27 March 2023, a fire occurred at an immigration detention center in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico, near the border with the United States. The fire killed 40 people and left 27 others seriously injured. According to Vice interviewees, prison officials demanded bribes from migrants to release them and avoid deportation. The fire was allegedly started by inmates when they set fire to their mattresses to protest their detention conditions and impending deportation. CCTV security footage obtained by the press shows INM personnel fleeing the spreading flames and smoke while leaving the detainees locked in their cell. Ciudad Juárez ( , ; "Juárez City"), commonly referred to as just Juárez (Lipan language, Lipan: ''Tsé Táhú'ayá''), is the most populous city in the Administrative divisions of Mexico, Mexican state of Chihuahua (state), Chihuahua. It was known until 1888 as ("The North Pass"). It is the seat of the Juárez Municipality, Chihuahua, Juárez Municipality with an estimated metropolitan population of 2.5 million people. Cruz Pérez Cuéllar
Cruz Pérez Cuéllar (born 16 January 1969) is a Mexican politician affiliated with the National Regeneration Movement (Morena). In 2018 he was elected to the Senate from Chihuahua for the 64th and 65th sessions of Congress (2018–2024). After taking leave from his Senate seat, he was elected Mayor of Ciudad Juárez on 6 June 2021. Life Early political career Pérez Cuéllar was born in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, on 16 January 1969. In 1988, Pérez Cuéllar joined the National Action Party (PAN), while he was pursuing a law degree from the Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez (UACJ) and owning a jewelry store known as La Colonial. He was involved with UACJ student organizations and the PAN. In 1991, he served as the coordinator for the PAN federal deputy campaign in Fourth Federal Electoral District of Chihuahua, Chihuahua's fourth district.
